Love Actually Review
Noted English screenwriter Richard Curtis makes his directorial bow with this romantic comedy that follows the dizzying foibles of no less than a dozen couples, featuring a cast that includes Hugh Grant as a bachelor British PM and Billy Bob Thornton as a disturbing hybrid of the worst of Clinton and Bush. Seemingly taking its lead from Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel (both of which Curtis also wrote), Love's rich, eclectic collection of pop songs becomes something more than mere movie-soundtrack wallpaper. Indeed, tracks as disparate as Joni Mitchell's hauntingly autumnal remake of "Both Sides Now" and the Pointer Sisters' effusive '80s hit "Jump" function somewhere between supporting player and narrative Greek chorus. It's a mature, often introspective collection that mixes the expected chestnuts (the Beach Boys' evergreen "God Only Knows") and covers (Eva Cassidy's stately version of Christine McVie's "Songbird," an R&B-infused take of "All You Need Is Love" by Lynden David Hall) with standout work from Norah Jones (a torched-up "Turn Me On"), Texas (the Dusty Springfield-esque dramatics of "I'll See It Through"), and Wyclef Jean's joyous "Take Me As I Am." Underscoring the film's Christmas subtext are three holiday-themed bonus cuts by Otis Redding, Billy Mack (the film's resident rock star burnout, played by Bill Nighy), and Olivia Olson. --Jerry McCulley

More disappointment

"Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" as it says on both the front and back sides of the CD? Give me a break!

As another reviewer wrote on Jan 10, it is disappointing not to get a movie soundtrack when you pay for a movie soundtrack. I bought the CD to listen to Olivia Olson's (Joanna Anderson's) "All I want for Christmas is You."

Of course, the track is not the same one as I heard when I saw the movie. In the movie she sings her intro without background music. On the audio CD, there is unwanted background music clutter from the start and, to my ear, it only gets worse as the piece progresses.

When will the recording industry set standards voluntarily, clearly spelling out on labels and advertising any soundtrack substitutions? Or, do they prefer to wait for more government regulation?

J Records, a unit of BMG, shouldn't expect any more business from me anytime soon.

Perfectly recaptures the mood of the movie

In the CD liner notes, the music director for the film Love Actually suggests that different music would have made this a completely different movie, and I have to agree. When listening to the soundtrack, I could easily recollect exactly where in the movie each song was used; the music served to recapture all of the complex emotions so wonderfully portrayed in the film.

Overall, the soundtrack has a rather jazzy/R&B feel, from Kelly Clarkson's "The Trouble With Love Is" to Lynden David Hall's upbeat version of "All You Need is Love." Those who have seen this CD in stores may have been dismayed to find that the song list doesn't include Billy Mack's hilarious "Christmas is All Around," but don't worry--this is included as a bonus track along with "All I Want for Christmas is You," another of the film's more fun tunes.

This soundtrack makes perfect background or mood music for virtually any occasion, especially a romantic one. Highly recommended!

if you love the movie

You will love this sound track. I am a huge fan of this movie and now I love the sound track. I find myself listening to the more "christmas music" tracks wanting Christmas to get here.

LOVE IT
