Box Set 68-78 Review
Three disc retrospective for the UK progressive rock act featuring singer/songwriter Peter Hammill. Compiled by Hammill and past band members. It covers the years 1968 through 1978, it's the comprehensive document of the band's career from beginning to end. Drawing on material from various BBC sessions, studio albums, long deleted singles, live 'bootlegs' and Virgin Records archives. A veritable treasure chest of previously unreleased material and collector's favorites. All tracks have been remastered by Hammill. Packaged in a long box complete with a 50 page booklet featuring previously unpublished photos, a reminiscence by Tony Banks (Genesis), a comprehensive gig listing and discography, memoirs of the four main band members (Hugh Banton, Guy Evans, David Jackson and Hammill) and an insightful fan's retrospective. Packaged in a 10' by 5.5' hardback style digipak. 2000 release.

The holy grail for VdGG fans

This is a dream come true for long-time fans. The rare BBC tracks, as well as the live concert tracks from Italy, are a revelation. GREAT STUFF!! And the old classics from the studio albums have been remastered and they sound incredible - I felt the way I did many moons ago when I heard these tunes for the first time. Very crisp, not dull and flat like some of the Virgin reissues of VDGG on cd. And the booklet is worth the price alone. Literally over a hundred photos with a (somewhat humorous) history of the group (including commentary from the boys themselves). Probably not for the novice, but a real treasure trove for the hardcore (or somewhat knowledgable).

Essential music for the thirsty prog fan

This box includes bootleg quality live stuff from this unique, masterful, intense seventies prog band.
The remastered studio versions sound much better. Listen to 'A plague of Lighthouse Keepers' with headphones, or not, and you will rediscover or brutally discover these british rock masters. Get hooked strangely, magically in this profound masterpiece. Two of the three studio tracks of 'Pawn Hearts' are not included, just live, so they are a must listen.

We all VDGG fans wish we could get all their catalog remastered someday. The box has sold well amd is is A must for VDGG die hard fans, and and excellent intro to those about to prog .

Real fine stuff, but be warned: quite deep and chaotic sometimes. High quality musicians with few electric guitars. Inmerse yourself in Distorted hammonds, Saxes, acoustic guitar and piano, an outstanding drummer and maybe the best singer and song writer in the prog realm ever. I mean the very best performer too...

Rough Cuts for Fervent Fans Only

Van der Graaf's The Box could have been a "Best Of" if not for the rough live tracks which mar this otherwise excellent set. Some are almost unlistenable especially in contrast to the remastered studio tracks. Far better-sounding live (in studio) tracks can be found on the Maida Vale CD.

Unlike Genesis' similarly-styled Archives 1967-75 boxed set, there are only a few rarities ("Theme 1" and "w" among others). It's a shame VdGG didn't put out more shorter single-worthy songs like these.

If new to Van der Graaf Generator, buy their monumental Still Life and/or Godbluff recordings!
