I purchased this album without having ever heard a note of VDGG, but figured that, on the strength of a strong customer rating, and the glowing reviews of VDGG as a band, this disc was a safe bet. I found the disc to be thoroughly disappointing. Vocalist Hamill's efforts to stretch the limits of his vocal range for the sake of emotional/dramatic expression are admirable, but the results are not. Hamill's vocals are certainly brimming with emotion, but I prefer vocal performances that are both emotional AND technically proficient. No matter where you live, somebody down the street from you sings better than this guy. The music itself lacks bite - the solos are cliched, the bottom end is lacking, and the few moments of electricity sound contrived rather than inspired. Passion and melodrama are oft and easily confused, and this album is case in point. On the positive side, the lyrical themes of the compositions are ambitious, the lyrics are certainly esoteric, and the song structures are interesting, but for me, great music combines these elements with superb technical musicianship, which includes vocals. This album lacks such musicianship. As a music fan who enjoys the technical excellence of jazz and improvisational rock, I have found much of the same skill on many prog rock albums, but not on this one. "Still Life" offers brief moments of such skill, but listeners of Davis, Coltrane, Hendrix, and ELP alike will likely not be impressed. If you're looking to get started in prog rock, try King Crimson, ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, David Bowie, and even Frank Zappa first.
