Beatles - Let It Be
Let It Be Review
Sloppy in conception, and even sometimes in the playing, Let It Be often gets a bad rap. Unfairly, as it's often as charming, well written, and (oh yeah) rocking as the Beatles' "better" albums; it's also more outright fun than Abbey Road, the masterpiece it followed into the stores. With Lennon and McCartney working together on the perfect "I've Got a Feeling," "Two of Us," and "Dig a Pony," it's hard to believe these guys were about to implode. --Rickey Wright

I really enjoy this album and was really torn between naked and the original..But Let It Be delivers as good or even better than 'naked'...Beatlegirl61

In many ways their most "fun" album

OK, I suppose it's not a great as Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, Revolver, or Rubber Soul. But I personally think it's more "fun" to listen to. I wont go through each track, many other reviewers have done that very well already and it ultimately boils down to personal taste. For example, some people hate Long and Winding Road; others love it. Additionally, most folks say this is the least-good Beatle Album. I don't agree - I'd award that to the White Album which would have been a great single disc album, as George Martin wanted.

If Let It Be is not as good as the first four listed above, why 5 stars? Well, after all it is the Beatles and this album is better than anything our current artists can muster at all. If you gave stars on a REAL relative worth scale, the the above-named albums would (from me) get 5 stars and all the other Beatle Albums would get 4. I wouldn't give a 5 star ratings to any other rock-era albums by ANYBODY. Remember - we're talking albums here, not individual songs. The Beatles were, and remain, the only artists who could produce an entire album of worthwhile songs.

On that scale I might generously give 3 stars to a few current artists' but that would be based on individual songs. Based on entire albums...well, that's why I use Itunes to get the one good song off of current releases.

So, buy this CD and enjoy the Beatles in a more "relaxed" production mode (even though this session was anything but that career-wise)

Unfairly Dismissed

It is generally accepted by Beatles fans that Let It Be was a messy failure. I am baffled by this approach to a great album, and I think its worthwhile to try to figure out why it has been dishonoured almost universally. There seem to be two reasons: 1) the production by Phil Spector is a bit over-the-top and at times embarrassing with the use of stringed instruments in the background, making it sound a bit unlike our beloved Beatles, and 2) the widespread misconception that this was the final Beatles album, coupled with the fame of their breakup, could lead one to believe that Let It Be was the beginning of the end. However, the release of Let It Be after Abbey Road belies the fact that the former was in fact recorded first. How, then, could Let It Be show the Beatles disintegrating, when only months later they recorded one of their greatest masterpieces?
Let It Be does have a number of songs which are rather unoriginal blues riffs, but it doesn't matter. Two Of Us, Dig A Pony, Across The Universe, I Me Mine, and Let It Be are all among their greatest recordings. Furthermore, the "unoriginal" filler on the album is really enjoyable, even though it doesn't reach the awfully high standards of Lennon/McCartney and Harrison compositions.
N.B.: DO NOT buy Let It Be...Naked. I didn't listen to the reviews, and bought it simply for a copy of Don't Let Me Down. That was a stupid mistake, for a better version of that song exists on Past Masters, Vol. 2, while nothing else on the album is significantly different except for Across the Universe and I Me Mine. Further, a few of the songs (Dig It and Maggie Mae) are not on the Naked rerelease. They may not be among the best on the album, but considering the length of the album there was no reason to cut them, and I firmly believe they add to the listening experience if you are planning on playing the album from start to finish.
