The Beach Boys - Sounds Of Summer - The Very Best Of The Beach Boys
Sounds Of Summer - The Very Best Of The Beach Boys Review
The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

I can't believe that every single greatest song that the Beach Boys ever did are all on one disc! A must buy for anyone who is even remotely aware of these guys. Ignore the guys who are whining about how they shouldn't be mono or whatever the hell they're saying. Buy this soon! Wait, I've got a better idea. Buy it NOW.

The Beach Boys were a very talented group. That is all there is to it. They understood the importance of harmonies and, in my opinion, perfected the harmony/melody combination.
There are only five songs out of twenty-five that I do not care for on the Sounds of Summer album, which is incredible, considering on most other albums there are five, maybe six out of twelve that I don't like.
1. California Girls 10/10 This song really created a platform for the Beach Boys to grow from.
2. I Get Around 10+/10 I'm probably going to say this for all the songs, but, great harmonies. One of the many songs on this album that you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of it.
3. Surfin' Safari 9/10 Not the best song on the album, it sounded kinda weird at first and it took a while to grow on me.
4.Surfin' U.S.A. 10+/10 The most well known Beach Boys song, the melody is great, the harmonies are beautiful, and it makes you want to run out and surf
5.Fun, Fun, Fun 10+/10 Ahhh.. Girls and cars. Need I say more?
6.Surfer Girl 10+/10 All I can say is, wow.
7.Don't Worry Baby 10/10 Took a while to grow on me, but it is still a great song.
8.Little Deuce Coupe 10+/10 One of my personal favorites, and another well known song.
9.Shut Down 10/10 Same genre as Little Deuce Coupe, just as good, not as well known.
10. Help Me, Rhonda 10/10 Just good harmonies and beautiful melodies
11. Be True To Your School 10/10 Very funny, don't know where this inspiration came from, but very good.
12.When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) 5/10 A good song... but not my favorite, decent harmonies, but kinda boring.
13.In My Room 10+/10 Another one of my favorites, talks to anyone who has ever retreated to their room just too be alone
14.God Only Knows 10+/10 Once again.. a favorite. Absolutely beautiful melodies and harmonies.
15. Sloop John B 10/10 Great song. Repeat on harmonies and melodies.
16.Wouldn't It Be Nice 10/10 Fun song. I really like the timpani
17. Getcha Back 9/10 Took a while to grow on me, but a decent song
18. Come Go With Me 10++/10 My favorite song on the album,
harmonies are absolutly perfect, just beautiful.
19. Roch and Roll Music 9/10 Good song, but not their best
20. Dance, Dance, Dance 10++/10 second favorite song on the album, even those who hate the Beach Boys like this song
21.Barbara Ann 10+/10 Great song. Really fun to listen to. They all seemee to have fun with this song.
22.Do You Wanna Dance? 10/10 Another song in which they utilize the timpani, which makes the whole song.
23.Heroes and Villians 9/10 Took me a while to figure this song out, but once I did, it grew on me real fast.
24.Good Timin' 10+/10 Another set of good harmonies and melodies. I like this song. Alot.
25.Kokomo 10++/10 Third favorite song on the album. If this song is any indication, the Beach Boys were in the wrong genre of music.
26. Do It Again 5/10 Decent, but not great.
27. Wild Honey 5/10 Again, decent, but not great.
28. Darlin' 5/10 I did not like this song.
29. I Can Hear Music 5/10 Finally, decent, but not great.
30. Good Vibrations 10+/10 A great closer to a great album

BEACH BOYS #1...

With astonishing popularity and cross-generational staying-power over four decades,Brian Wilson's super songs have become enduring classics of Americana. Difference between BRIAN WILSON music and(Pet)SOUNDS repertoire created by Brian Wilson for performance by his legendary recording/touring band,THE BEACH BOYS of Hawthorne California is now source of musicological treatise and "debate".SOUNDS of SUMMER's replete with gargage ditties nasally intoned by Mike Love(Surfin'Safari;Surfin'USA; Little Deuce Coupe;Shutdown)to anthem tunes like CALIFORNIA GIRLS and I GET AROUND;to breakthough compositions like Please Let Me Wonder;GOOD VIBRATIONS and PET SOUNDS'Wouldn't it Be Nice. Though The Beach Boys toured for years, occasionally producing KOKOMO trips and Do It Again DARLIN's,Brian Wilson's illness stifled a nova-talent looming in SMILE that took forty years to explode and renew the pop firmament. The WONDERMINTS play Brian Wilson songs live better than anyone. They play BEACH BOYS as well as various formations ever did. The Very Best of THE BEACH BOYS:Sounds of Summer,is excellent comprise of Beach Boys(studio & touring) songs. The disc begins with concert opener,CALIFORNIA GIRLS and is followed by climax hit,I GET AROUND.The album closes with an excellent recording of concert closer and rock milestone,GOOD VIBRATIONS...

Songs like,'Til I Die;Surf's-Up;& Caroline No;are not included because they are NOT Beach Boy songs.Inclusion of HEROES & VILLAINS(with spectacular rumble-bass undertone runs played by Wilson's studio musician ace,Carol Kaye)is blessed "error"that's better than either(then)SMILEY,SMILE or(now)SMILE version. This album of 30 songs is The Beach Boys at their best.To put Barbara Ann with GOD ONLY KNOWS is bewildering but fact is THE BEACH BOYS were America's number 1 FUN(fun/fun)band and tunes like Be True to Your School were as BOYish as DON'T WORRY BABY. This disc(like BEATLES 1)is iconic pop.If you only own one, this set of PLAYERS works like a Time Machine of songs "In Your Room".
