Talking Heads - The Best of Talking Heads
The Best of Talking Heads Review
Formed in NYC in the mid-'70s by David Byrne, Chris Franz, Tina Weymouth, and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison, the Talking Heads evolved out of their now-legendary humble beginnings at CBGB's to become one of the most adventurous and influential bands ever. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the Heads' visionary, polyrhythmic sound daringly combined funk and punk, African beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop. From their 1977 debut through their Brian Eno-produced classics to their '88 farewell, Naked, they both pushed artistic boundaries and delivered indelible radio hits like "Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down The House."

More than Once in a Lifetime

"Once In A Lifetime" for me was the song and music video that got me to look away and find that there was and is other music out there besides movie score and soundtracks. "Once In A Lifetime" got me right into the 80s new wave or whatever you want to call it (there was really quite a lot of different "rock" "pop" and all the rest coming out of that decade). Talking Heads are endearing to me and I love this album. I don't have to listen to all these "best of the 80s" compilations but instead I can just listen to Talking Heads and get much better feeling for that unique sound that just gets a grip on you. I like this album. I can't say anything bad about it.

"Greatest Hits doesn't do them justice"

Not a bad single disc best-of. However, with this band, any "greatest hits" package is superflous since nearly all of their original studio albums are essential (the exceptions being TRUE STORIES and the final album, NAKED). Skip this and start with REMAIN IN LIGHT or LITTLE CREATURES or, even better, the magnificent MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD.

Sick of Incompletes

Any band that puts out more than one "best of" or "greatest hits" or "definitive collection" or "ultimate collection" and doesn't include everything on at least one of those releases gets 1 STAR. Period. TH have released several hits compilations and once again "Love For Sale" is omitted. Piss on these record companies and bands that can't deliver a complete hits collection!
