System of a Down - Steal This Album!
Steal This Album! Review
With Rage Against the Machine disbanded, System of a Down ascend to the political aggro-rock throne, and with Steal This Album, the Los Angeles-based quartet prove themselves worthy to wear the crown. A play on the late activist Abbie Hoffman’s Steal This Book, the album consists of 16 System songs from the mid-1990s through 2001. The band stresses the songs are not "B-sides or outtakes"; in fact, they clearly show System at their apex. These smart, varied songs feature Serj's frenetic, staccato, Jello Biafra-like phrasing atop the band's edgy, commanding, metal-meets-punk base. From the funny, frantic "Chic 'N' Stu," to "F**k the System," "A.D.D. (American Dream Disorder)," and "Boom!" System keep listeners guessing with discomfiting time changes that match up with Serj's incendiary lyrics. In keeping with their creative, fan-oriented approach, System are releasing four limited runs of the CD, each version featuring artwork from a different band member. This is not escapist rock. It's an intense and eye-opening aural history lesson you can mosh to. --Katherine Turman

It's Their Worst; But It's By No Means Bad

System of a Down are by far my favorite band, and I got this a long time, but I'm finally writing a review for it. I've listened to this A LOT, and none of these songs are even the least bit boring to me. SOAD's music is full of tempo changes and surprises the first time you hear it. The first time you hear it, it's just amazing. And it's just as amazing 6 months after that.
This CD is their B-sides album, with songs that didn't quite make the cut for "Toxicity". They say it's not because they're not as good as the songs on Toxicity, it's because they did not fit the overall "Flow" of the album.
The songs on this CD blend together more than any other CD by System. Especially at the end of the CD, all of the songs blend into each other very well and it can be sort of hard to notice when a new song starts. But all of the songs sound different, so it's pretty easy.

1. Chic N Stu: When I first heard this, I wasn't fond of it. It was kinda... well... dumb. But I like it now. It's one of the few songs by System of a Down that I actually didn't like the first time I heard it. But it's caught on to me, and I like it. Pizza pizza pie!
10/10

2. Innervision: This song isn't the greatest. I like it, but there's just always been something about this song I don't like. And remember, the ratings I am giving these songs is by SOAD standards. Even the worst SOAD song is better than 90% of the other songs by other artists.
8/10

3. Bubbles: Fast song. Good too. One of the best on the CD, pretty catchy.
10/10

4. Boom!: They made a video for this song. It was kinda weird and I didn't like it as much as I did other videos by SOAD. But it's a pretty good song. Catchy.
10/10

5. Nuguns: Meh. Still really good, but I don't really know, there's just something about it.
8/10

6. A.D.D.: One of the best on the CD. Awesome lyrics. "We don't give a F*ck about your world!"
10/10

7. Mr. Jack: Slow song, with its fast parts. Probably the best song on the CD, very catchy. Although it's only around 4 min. long, it's the longest song on the CD.
11/10

8. I-E-A-I-A-I-O: Okay, I take that back. THIS is the best song on the CD. Fast, almost impossible to sing, lyrics and a chant-like chorus. Just plain awesome.
11/10

9. 36: The interlude.
No rating

10. Pictures: The official start, for me, to the second half. This is when the songs start to blend together a little more. And it's not as good as the first half. But this song is still good.
9/10

11. Highway Song: A song that I just kinda haven't caught on too yet. It's still really good though.
9/10

12. F*ck The System: Aahh... 2nd best song on the CD. But, kids, if you need to get the clean version, good luck trying to listen to this. They say the f-word, like, 22 times, and the edited version kinda ruins everything. But the unedited is AWESOME!!!
11/10

13. Ego Brain: Another slower song that I just don't exactly like. But it's still awesome by other song standards.
8/10

14. Thetawaves: A good follow-up to Ego Brain. Awesome song.
9/10

15. Roulette: Okay, at first, I didn't like this CD. At the time I got it, I wanted FAST and HARD songs. And this was slow. But now I'm fine with slow songs, and this is a good song. Sort of repetitive lyrics, but who the heck cares? Just a little love song.
11/10

16. Streamline: I WASN'T THERE FOR YOU! Well, good way to end off a great CD. Kind of heavy at times, but it's not a very heavy song. Good song.
10/10

Out of 150 possible points [we don't count 36], System of a Down's "Steal This Album" comes away with a 145! That's a 96.66, and obviously a 5-star. Although this is their worst, WHO THE CRAP CARES? IT'S AWESOME AND ANY SOAD OR NON-SOAD FAN NEEDS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you. Thank you very much. Buy this CD.

Stealing The System......

This album entitled "Steal This Album!" is in my viewpoint a masterpiece. Let me explain. Now After all the hightened succes of Toxicity and all that jazz, a little over a year of Toxicitys release they seemingly throw out there a compilation of B sides/ and outtakes from toxicity. They were songs that didnt fit into Toxicity or wasnt up to par or some other reason. Seemingly, all these songs fit perfectly together and form one of the best albums I have ever heard. I think by them calling it STEAL THIS ALBUM, they give off a vibe that says here ya go, take it or leave. They didnt wanna put up a hype about it, they juss wanted it to be judged for what it was. No fancy cover, not even a booklet, Just the music. Heres my individual of each and every song on this great piece of art:

1. Chic N Stu-(10/10)- A song about the deadly addictions of food and food advertisements and how they have us all on the run. If you like pizza, you will love this song. I honestly think this is their funniest songs to date. Bravo.

2. Innervision-(10/10)- This is a ghouly song right here. Completely different from Chic N stu and changes pace fast. Definitly something like their first album.

3. Bubbles-(10/10)- My favorite on the album. The bass kicks into a creepy kick line while serj's ghostly voice repeats over and over,"May I remind you".

4. BOOM!-(10/10)- The first and only single off this album. It was really a perfect choice considering the political vibe but was even before we went into Iraw so you know these guys are the real deal. They've been fighting the man before anyone else cared.

5. Nuguns-(10/10)- A thrashing rock song that gets your grandma off her behind. Do not listen to while operating heavy machinery.

6. A.D.D.(American Dream Disorder)-(10/10)-One of their most politically inclined songs. Really puts this on a petastull and the honesty and rashness buts a hole in your head.

7. Mr. Jack-(8/10)- Another really creepy song, overall not the most stand out track on the LP but a definite listen to.

8. I-E-A-I-A-I-O- (10/10)- Gotta love this. A song called I E A I A I O. Only in america. Great lyrics, Great tunes, gotta love it.

9. 36-(6/10)- SOAD's 36th song. ad its about 36 seconds. Great. Woulda been a great track if it was longer.

10. Pictures-(10/10)- Oh boy! This song really picks this album up a notch. One of the best.

11. Highway song- (10/10)- Serj really picks this one up. His shouts of "Our days are never coming back!" really sticks in your head for awhile.

12. F*ck the system-(10/10)- A humorous rant of F*cking the system. I think its about how people mindlessly say F*uck the system with out really meaning it or understanding it. Suring the verses Serj is basically rambling like a looney. But then again, when isnt he?

13. Ego brain- (9/10)- A powerful song, I have no idea whats its about. I reall like the lyriics though, they have a repour about them that sparkles.

14. Thetawaves-(10/10)- This song is pretty sick. Nothing really else to say. Good night, and good luck.

15. Roulette-(10/10)-The slow song of the album. One of the best. Who ever says SOAD cant make slow songs is absolutely nuts, and this song proves it.

16. Streamline-(10/10)- Great closer, I couldve seen this on toxicity though. But either way its a complete 180 from where this album began.

FINAL WORDS:

STEAL THIS ALBUM!.........just kidding, buy the friggen thing. Your're not poor.
