Sublime - Sublime
Sublime Review
For all his tattoos and bulked-up frat-boy persona, singer Bradley Nowell had real soul, which made his fatal heroin overdose even more tragic. There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. --Steve Knopper

Good cd overall

Sublime was a good band that never lived to see their full potential. Their self titled album is their most famous album, filled with such well known songs as "What I Got","Santeria", and "Wrong Way".The album is a mixture of reggae,hip-hop, and some punk, similar to the debut but much, much more focused and less "jammy". The spontaneity of the debut will be missed by hardcore fans, and theres just something about the way the songs on it(Ruca,Badfish,DJ's..) gel together, blending different styles of music, that is missing and makes it less fun. They still are a capable band on this release, however, and it still delivers the goods overall.

Even this breakout album.True sublime fans know what they had to offer. A little bit punk,a dash of hip-hop and an earfull of reggae beats. They had it all, thats what made brad's death so sensless and sad. This album takes the sound of sublime and the clout of a major record label(sorry SKUNK) and delivers great song after great song. Most albums only have a few lasting songs. And most bands only have a limited shelf life. But with sublime every time you listen to it is emotional and satisfing. Thats what made them so great. Brad's been dead for almost 10 years..can you believe that... and there music is just as powerful and moving today. Try to listen to this album and not sing and dance along..Go ahead I dare you!! Once you listen to this go back and get the whole Sublime catalog and then you will realize what a truely great band this was and is.

I will now be purchasing my 8th personal copy of this album. For some reason I can't hold onto this disk if my life counted on it. What more can I say, I will continue to buy this album when it disappears from my collection. Truly a masterpiece. Thank you Sublime!!
