Santana - The Best of Santana
The Best of Santana Review
There are a couple of Santana best-of compilations out there, and even a few mastersound gold-plated CDs, but this collection is as good a place as any for a newcomer to explore. It contains the band's three essential charters--"Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," and "Oye Como Va"--along with some lesser hits. Santana broke barriers, making ethnic-influenced music palatable to the mainstream, but this set doesn't sound like a history lesson. Few bands have ever made better music for driving on a hot summer day, and this CD is ideal for blasting out the windows of your car on a crowded thoroughfare. --Charles R. Cross

A LITTLE BIT OF SOUL SACRIFICE

This is definitely is very good put together album for Santana lovers here. This album consist of all the best you can imagine from his thirty year span. Yeh it might be missing a few, but it makes up for the songs on here. Heres a list of songs in order of this album that will encourage you to pick this gem up:

Jingo 4/5
Evil Ways 4/5
Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen 5/5
Oye Como Va 4/5
Samba Pa Ti 5/5
No One To Depend On 5/5
Hold On 5/5
Europia 5/5****** (awesome track here)
Everybody's Everything 5/5

so anyways, vertially every song on this album jams as far as I'm concern, and you don't have to be a fanatic on Santana to enjoy this masterpiece just a music lover, yes indeed.

Excellent synopsis of Santana's career
4
While not the most comprehensive collection of Carlos Santana's work, this album contains his most popular hits, and offers insight into the musical style of one of the pre-eminent rock guitarists of the 60s & 70s. As such, it is an excellent choice for people who don't own any of his music, but would like to.

It contains fine versions of standards such as Evil Ways, No One I Can Depend On, and Oye Como Va, as well as his quintessential version of Peter Green's classic, Black Magic Woman. Equally good is his cover of the Zombies' hit She's Not There.

This mini-collection displays Santana's smooth flowing, melodius, yet rocking licks. Stick this in your car CD rack, so you can listen whenever the mood strikes you, without waiting for his songs to come up on an oldies station.

Good enough, but is it the best?

This is a not a bad album for Santana fans, but you don't have to listen long to realize that the band really went off the boil after the first three albums, and although there is a nice version of the Zombies hit She's Not There and a pretty tune from a later album called Europa in this collection, the purchase of Abraxas (their second album) on its own might be more satisfactory for many Santana fans.

One of the problems with a "best of" Santana is that there were several different line ups, though all included guitarist Carlos Santana, so you are not necessarily getting the best of one particular act.

This album does not include hits from Santana's recent pop revival with albums like Supernatural and Shaman.

As I have posted a number of reviews, here is what I mean by my star ratings:

* A really worthless CD
** A CD that has some good stuff, but some major defects.
*** An OK CD that will please fans of the artist in question.
**** An excellent CD that represents the best work of the artist in question and can be bought with confidence.
***** An absolute classic that is the best, or among the best, of its genre. Your collection should start here.
