Santana - Supernatural
Supernatural Review
The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-'90s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo," "Africa Bamba," "Migra," "Primavera," and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms. --Jerry McCulley

Santana at his best

I've listened to Carlos Santana since I was a teenager (now in my 50"s). He sounds as good or better than he did back in the day!

One of the Millennium era's top albums! SMOOTH!!

I have always liked Santana, but the staple hits were always"Oye Coma Va" and "Black Magic Woman" which was old stuff. When 1999 rolled around, and this album came out,I was very turned on to the sound of it so I bought it.The guitar work of Carlos Santana is simply amazing and I loved the way that all different artists were mixed in,most notably Rob Thomas who did vocals on "Smooth".My other favorite was"Maria Maria" but overall this was one of the finest produced albums I have ever heard and it renewed my interest in this band. This album is best described as music from an old band with a modern flare to it.If you're in the market for millennium era music(1999-2000)then I have to recommend this one.Cool album cover too.It looks like one of Living Colour's old album covers.

One of the top ten rock albums of recent times

You can't have perfection from any rock album I can think of, and out of ignorance I can't speak to other styles. Even in the world of rock things are so diverse that you can't really make comparisons on technical grounds. But if I were stranded today with only ten albums this would be on the list. You can't discount the strength of the medium to make you feel good; and this album will make you feel good. It's sweet and pure, straightforward Santana type music.
