Santana - Shaman
Shaman Review
How could Carlos Santana hope to follow the massive comeback album Supernatural? The solution he settled upon was to once again pull in as many guest artists as possible. Shaman features a slew of stars, but, despite their presence, the instrumental "Victory Is Won" is the standout track here, as Santana blazes through an exhibition of his patented fusion of Latin and rock. In contrast, the sugary pop single "The Game of Love," sung by Michelle Branch, illustrates the lack of consistency that mars the album. Only Ozomatli and Macy Gray seem to totally get Santana. That said, his cover of Angelique Kidjo's "Adouma" is storming, and Santana stands strong when he ventures into world-music territory ("Foo Foo," "Aye, Aye"). However, if the celebrated guitarist had concentrated a little more on who he is and not on who he believes people would like him to be, he'd have made a better album. --Jake Barnes

The best Santana duet compilation
5
From the 3 duet compilations produced so far, "Shaman" is truly the best. Of course, it depends on taste and that is subjective, but there's lots of talent on this CD. And as always you hear Santana's guitar cry. You'll find Macy Gray with "Amore" and Michelle Branch with "The Game of Love" as well as "Novus" featuring Placido Domingo, and the excellent Dido with "Feels Like Fire." Well, I have all three compilations and I've listened to them all many, many times, but while no CD can be absolutely perfect like anything else in life, I find that "Shaman" has a lot of quality tunes on it.

Better than Supernatural
4
If you liked Supernatural, you should like this album. If you didn't you probably won't like this, although the purists should note that it has a good number of Latino rock songs that can't be ignored. It runs a bit too long and there are a few songs you are bound to not like, but this is inevitable for an album of diverse musical styles. "Adouma" (track 1), "Nothing at All" featuring Musiq (2), "Victory is Won" (7), "Sideways" featuring Citizen Cope (10), "Hoy Es Adios" feat Alejandro Lerner (14), and "Novus" featuring tenor Placido Domingo (16) are the best tracks that received little or no radio airplay on corporate radio. "The Game of Love" featuring Michelle Branch (3), "Why Don't You & I" featuring Chad Kroeger (11; Alexander Band on the radio version) and "America" featuring P.O.D. (9) are the ones that were hits. All these are good; I don't like Macy Gray's voice (Amore Sexo, 5) and Dido's song (Feels like Fire, 12) is just OK for me; I am not a big fan of Dido's style anyway. You may like other songs and not like some of the others and there is a lot here from which to choose. Those who think this is worse than Supernatural either didn't like Supernatural and new Santana in the first place (the "Purists") or just have not listened to this great album closely enough.
