Rod Stewart - It Had to Be You... The Great American Songbook
It Had to Be You... The Great American Songbook Review
Rod Stewart's mellowing years have neatly coincided with a commitment to smart ballad choices and a generally warmer musical persona. Rod the Mod liberated at last? Like many a pop singer, Stewart returns here to what's become generally known as the Great American Songbook, that evergreen body of mid-20th century songcraft that continues to inspire singers across oceans and generations. It's said that Stewart has been vocalizing many of these songs in private for years, and given the warm, human scale of most of the performances here, it's not hard to believe. Producer Phil Ramone's spare, unobtrusive arrangements inspire the singer to some of his most subtle and rewarding performances in years. Stewart's slightly weary vocal tack handsomely suggests the smoke, booze, and aching heart that lie at the best of these songs. Such back-to-the-future efforts can often sound like a last career gasp; here, they seem a refreshing breath of fresh air. --Jerry McCulley

How Good is this

Seriously... when I first heard that Rod Stewart had released a CD in which he takes on the classics, my first reaction was one of shock, I didn't bother going out and buying it because I did not think it would be any good. How wrong I was. I got it as a gift, and was completely blown away. I could not believe the great job he had done, needless to say I have bought the other three albums and am hoping he releases a few more :)
It had to be him!

Much has been written about Rod doing the standards...at first I had my doubts, being a fan of Rod I didn't think his voice would fit these types of songs...I was wrong! this cd is wonderful and Rod sounds good, very good arrangements makes this a great listening pleasure.

This CD has wonderfully produced music that makes me feel so happy and nostalgic when I listen to it. The CD arrived in a very timely manner from Amazon.com. Two of my three adult children came from different states to share last Sunday with me, their widowed mother. With happiness in our hearts we climbed in my vehicle, heading for our western north carolina mountains, to the strains of Rod Stewart and "It Had to be You". The drive was an hour long, and we heard each song on the way. These were the songs that their father and I danced to when we were courting many years ago. They reaffirmed that many of Rod's songs on this CD reimmerged during their dating days as well. WE ALL LOVE IT!
