Rick Springfield - Karma
Karma Review
Rick Springfield made pretty good pop-rock radio fodder in his early-'80s heyday; "Jessie's Girl," "I've Done Everything for You," and "Love Is Alright Tonight" are hard to argue with now, even if you didn't have much use for them when they were hits. Unfortunately, this former General Hospital star has happened upon enlightenment and feels the need to share it with the world. True feeling seems to lie behind "It's Always Something" (a tribute not to Gilda Radner, but to Springfield's late father), "Act of Faith," and the rest, but the shiny, slightly dated production and soap-ready emoting make Karma less interesting than a thrift-store copy of Working Class Dog. --Rickey Wright

I was a huge fan of Rick's music throughout the 80's. One thing I noticed - each album he made was better than the last... the music, the lyrics, the maturity. If you look at the difference between Working Class Dog and Human Touch - and then the difference between that and Rock Of Life, well, it's just a staggering increase in quality. Then he seemed to go really quiet....

Until this came out in 1999. This album blew me away then and I still love it and listen to it now (it's October 2005 as I write this). The only song I think he could have left off is the first spoken track. If I was going to be really picky I could also say Rick could have left off "Ordinary Girl" because it's an "ordinary" song (can you believe this was the track chosen to be released as a single ?????). Other than that every song is fantastic.

My absolute favourite on this is "In Veronica's Head".

If you are a fan of Rick's you'll love this. If you're not a fan - yet - then pick up this album. You'll see.....

"Hard to Grow"

I was very excited to hear a new Rick CD after a 10 year hiautus, with the exception of his group collaboration "Sahara Snow" released in 1997 (excellent CD, by the way, with 2 great songs written by Rick alone). But it was a very different sound than he had ever created before. Almost every piece has an acoustic base to it, loop percussion, and slide guitar riffs dominate throughout. The bonus track is the only song that brings out Rick's usual recipe for songwriting that most fans crave for. If I had to pick any songs to listen to other than the bonus, they would be "Prayer" and "Ordinary Girl". "Prayer" has a great melody and "Ordinary Girl" has the passion and sound with less slide guitar and organ (which is present in every song). The lyrics on this CD are great. Rick's voice is as passionate as ever. He shows once again that he is an extemely talented artist. But, this style of music doesn't work for me (from Rick or any other artist). My feel: this CD is ultimately one long electronic-acoustic, country song with forced vocals. On a better note, it's an effort of what Rick was feeling at the time. We all have our moods. If you're a huge Rick fan, like me, you'll want this CD anyway. There's something for almost everyone on it (except "live" drums!!!).

I am a proud owner of this CD.If you are a Rick Springfield fan there is nothing on here that will change your mind. Its not the 80s Jessies Girl sound but he's been moving further away from that with each release. My favorite song is It's Always Something.Don't we all think that at least 2o times a day.I recommend it
