Muse - Absolution
Absolution Review
One can't listen to Muse without hearing Bends-era Radiohead, so it's necessary to start there. But for all the familiar grandeur and gloom, Muse's other catharsis-rock influences, like Queen, Slade, and even Black Sabbath, provide the band with a dazzling, heart-on-their-sleeves theatricality. Always threatening to layer on another falsetto from singer Matt Bellamy, or conjure more guitar crunch from the ether, Absolution is downright Baroque in parts, like a Rufus Wainwright-penned rock opera fantasy. Yes, the record is completely unoriginal. But when these guys let it rip, there's no doubt they have the fever. "Stockholm Syndrome," for one, could only be produced by True Believers with a lust for power chord drama, full of angst, envy, and the bitter end of it all. If you wish a certain Thom Yorke-led outfit from Oxford had made another record or two before evolving into minor-key art rockers, Muse carry the torch for another few miles, gloriously and tragically unaware that they're running in circles. --Matthew Cooke

Where the other couldnt

In almost every review i have read for muse, i see, "radiohead" (sorry im gonna put my 2 cents in too).

To make it understood, Radiohead is a good band, i have almost all their music and id say my fav by far is "the bends" but i will say that not all their albums are good unlike.. Muse.

Muse has produced 3 great albums that i feel took off where radiohead couldnt.

Ignore what die-hard radiohead fans have to say about Muse taking off Radioheads music, because the reality is that Muse is continuing off from "The Bends" and "Ok Computer" and making music that is much better than the new radiohead albums. Radiohead died In my opinion with ok computer.. and thats where Muse came in and took their place by doing what radiohead couldnt do.... continue to make GOOD music.

Absolution is a masterpiece, carefully mixed from one great song to another. There is not one song on this cd i skip, it is one of those great albums that you listen from start to finish.

Song favs: Time is running out, Stockholm Syndrome, Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, TSP and Thoughts of a dying Athiest.

The rest of the songs are awesome but those stand out the most.

Id recommend this and their 2 previous albums to anyone and if you havent listened to "The Bends" by Radiohead i would recommend you buy that as that is radioheads best cd IMO...

Cant wait for Muse's new album!

Good, but don't think Radiohead please

Please stop comparing this band favorably to Radiohead based on the vocal range of Bellamy compared to Yorke. Yorke's vocal skills are not the reason Radiohead is amazing, just as Lennon's, Jagger's, or Dylan's range isn't the reason they made some of the greatest albums in history. If you want vocal range buy an old Steelheart album or some other crap. Don't get me wrong though, this band is pretty good, they're just not Radiohead, and I didn't ask them to be.

Derivative but Good

You will se many reviews in this space about how Muse "sounds like radiohead". True, they do sound like Radiohead circa 1995. They also have a propensity to be bombastic, self-absorbed, paranoid, and a tad pretentious. Let's be honest, however, those are ingredients for great music; which is exactly what Muse is.

Alternating between hard rock and complex instrumentation, Muse creates soundscapes which have the ability to engage the listener. The songs also have good hooks, which makes this album particularly fun to listen to over and over again.

If you like Brit-rock and are in search of something new (but not totally original) to listen to... this is your ticket.
