Yes 84 to 96 were dark years for Misfits fans left alone in the wilderness with nothing new but old bootlegs and Metal fans telling us they liked Metallica's version of "Green Hell" better than the original.
With the opening chords of"The Abonimable Dr.Phibes" the Misfits bit back offering salvation for fiends everywhere and with "American Psycho" sounding like a cross between an earthquake and an Atomic bomb you know it only gets
better.
With a line up of Jerry,Doyle,Dr.Chud and Michale Graves this was a band reborn,a band that was at it's peak with or without the fat, arrogant metalhead satanic guy.
If there's a bad song on this album I haven't heard it' from start to finish it delivers 110% The Danzig loyalists hated it because they wanted to see the Misfits fall flat on their ghoulish faces so that the only way Fiends would ever get to hear anything Misfits was if the fat old geezer felt a bit sentimental during one of his boring metal devil doolally shows(which sadly he did this year even sadder was that Doyle joined him when Jerry obviously wasn't invited to the party and now Doyle is trying to put together a project called "Gorgeous Frankenstein" with Danzig having his grubby hands on the producing side of things don't get me wrong I love Doyle he's the best and most original guitarist in the biz but his true home is with the fits not some crap side project.)
Yes I get quite sentimental when I hear this album The Misfits put themselves everywhere at this time writing great material, appearing on the wrestling and even getting George Romero to do a videoclip aand releasing action figures(which cost a bundle now on E-bay).
Sadly the magic didn't last, on "Famous Monsters" the follow up to "American Psycho" the cracks began to show ,there are some good songs on there but some questionable ones as well.
You could sense that the sniping of Danzig loyalists and bitter and Twisted "Where were you in 82?"types had begun to take their toll on the band as well as some projects that didn't happen that if they had could have had a more positive effect on the band i.e."Mars Attacks" and "Scream" were both written for and submitted to the movies of the same name.
Sadly in 2000 a frustrated Michale Graves called it quits taking Dr.Chud with him only to get rid of him later(and from what I've read Dr.Chud had a lot more to do with the disintergration of the Misfits as a behind the scenes character than the anti-Jerry Only crowd woulde care to admit.)
Jerry soldiered on and one can only hope an album with him,Dez and Robo is in the works as I'm a bit sick of Balzac and ex-members side projects but untill that fiendish day put this in your cd player, turn out the lights and listen to a piece of truly ghoulish, punk magic
