Madonna - True Blue
True Blue Review
A quintessential '80s pop artifact, Madonna's third album was a huge musical leap forward and ranks with Like a Prayer and Ray of Light in the top echelon of her works. Only the title track (a bit too obviously a '60s girl-group homage) and the fine-but-nothing-special "Jimmy Jimmy" slightly lower the quality bar. Most of the songs share a jittery dance-pop sound, edgy, distracted, and nerve-jangling but simultaneously invigorating and exhilarating and almost dangerously giddy--a perfect soundtrack for the mid-'80s. Highlights include the hedonist's credo of "Where's the Party," the subtle and pretty Latin pastiche "La Isla Bonita," and, towering above all, three stunning mega-hits. "Papa Don't Preach," with its gorgeous pseudo-classical strings intro, is a sumptuous airwaves banquet, as Madonna wrestles with the have-the-baby-or-give-it-up dilemma (abortion's not in the picture) in newly gritty tones. "Open Your Heart"'s marriage of jitter-pop and wistful melody underscores the singer's yearning but forceful stance ("You better open your heart to me, buster"). And "Live to Tell" is a riveting ballad, lushly melodic yet spare and haunting--a place, as the song says, where beauty lives. --Ken Barnes

You could do alot worse than this.

Giddy, cute, bubbly, slightly immature at times and definitely dated to the time period it was produced in. I listened to this CD again this morning for the first time in over 18 years. It brought back a lot of memories from `86/'87. Your enjoyment of Madonna's "True Blue" is more than likely going to depend on your mood. If you are feeling "up", this CD will accompany you nicely; on the other hand, this isn't something I could tolerate if I was upset or wanting to think deeply. I've heard this style done a lot worse ("Debbie Gibson: Out of the Blue"), but I've also heard it done much better (Pet Shop Boys: "Please" and "Actually")! Song themes rarely move past the theme of love, and when they do, it's a bit hard to take them too seriously. All but the most patients may find themselves skipping a few tracks here and there. I can't help but wonder why Warner Brothers would remaster this album and not any of the early material by `Prince'. If you happen to find a used copy, you probably won't regret it; I would have a hard time justifying purchasing the album again for the remastered version. The original CD version still sounds adequately loud enough, and the bonus tracks on the new version are kind of throw away and gimmicky.

One of Madonna's Best Albums.
5
True Blue is a great album, and presents some of Madonna's biggest hits. The best songs on it are "Open Your Heart",
"Papa Don't Preach", "White Heat" and "Love makes the world go round". Amongst the two singles Open your heart and Papa don't preach are "Live To Tell", "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita".
Most of the album is lisenable apart from the throw away track "Jimmy,Jimmy". Overall it's a great album, and Madonna really evolved on this album. Two great remixes are included on this remastered version of True Blue.
Track by Track rating.
1. Papa Don't Preach.
This is a good song for Madonna, and an essential madonna hit.
This track is very well known. It has a good beat and is very fun to listen to. 5/5
2. Open Your Heart.
This is one of Madonna's greatest hits. The album version is great, but check out the 12 inch remix because it is even better. Probably my favourite Madonna track after "Like A Prayer" this one has got to be the albums best track. 5/5
3. White Heat.
This song is equally as catchy as Open Your Heart and is a great pop song for this album. It could have probably been a single. It has a bit of monolouge at the beginning but is a great song. Like Open Your Heart it is very 80's sounding pop music. Makes you want to get up and dance. 5/5
4. Live To Tell.
This was one of Madonna's first serious ballads, and many people said it was her most beautiful song at this point in her career. It is quite a nice song, and fits in well with this album. Another hit. 4/5
5. Where's The Party.
This song was O.K. but I didn't find it particually catchy. This song sounded as if it belonged more on "You Can Dance", but I am glad they included it on the album. It is an attempt at a dance track from Madonna. It doesn't sound too bad, but it doesn't sound great either. 3/5.
6. True Blue.
This is the albums title track and is quite catchy, but does sound a lot like a song by a 60's girl group. I guess that's how it's supposed to sound. This was at the time another big hit for Madonna. Like Open Your Heart you may not instantly recognise the title, but you will recognise this song when you hear it. 4/5
7. La Isla Bonita.
This is a good song. It's probably one of the best latino sounding songs from the 1980's i've heard. It is full of rhythm and will make you want to get up and dance. This song is the most similar song to "Who's That Girl". It was also a big single from the album. 4/5.
8. Jimmy, Jimmy.
Like "Where's The Party" this song did not really catch my attention, and even though quite catchy at points this song was one of the albums filler tracks. Nothing rememberable. 2/5
9. Love Makes The World Go Round.
Some people found this song annoying, but I like it. It is a good song with an important message and I feel it is a better party track then "Jimmy, Jimmy" or "Where's The Party". It has a lot of latino flavour, and is quite energetic and good to dance to. Not a bad song. 4/5
10. True Blue - The Color Mix.
This is a colourful remix of the song ( as it's title implies ) and is better then the original. Warner Bros made a good choice including this track on the remastered version of "True Blue" 5/5
11. La Isla Bonita - Extended Remix.
Once again just like the True Blue remix this song has more beat then the original and is a better track. It has an extended intro and outro where the beat builds up and extra instrumental parts in it, and the beat is heavier. 5/5.
The sound quality of this album is great and differs in no way to any of todays albums.
Overall this album is worth the buy if your a fan of Madonna, and is one of her most vibrant and colourful albums, churning out plenty of hits.

More classic Madona from her early days!

TRUE BLUE is the album that put Madona on the map, and is a follow up to her first two albums MADONNA and LIKE a VIRGIN. Nearly every song here is a classic, with the title track having caused quite a stir when they did publicity for it back when it was released so long ago. La Isla Bonita has a somewhat personal meaning for me so it is a chilling, poignant song, where Open Your Heart will always be remembered largely for its peep-show style music video, but the track itself is very good in its own right!
