Madonna - Madonna: GHV2
Madonna: GHV2 Review
So there's this pop singer... you may have heard of her? Madonna, she's called, and the word is that she's basically all image; she went through a put-your-hands-all-over-my-body phase, then she got spiritual, and then she started wearing cowboy hats. Between all the gossip columns and photo shoots, though, she's left an unmatched trail of devastatingly wonderful singles--roaring dance records, tender ballads, and a curious combination of the two that is her personal specialty ("Secret" and "Ray of Light"). How many artists' best-of-the-second-decade collections crowd out legitimate hits? ("American Pie," anyone? "This Used to Be My Playground"?) Unlike 1990's Immaculate Collection, GHV2 doesn't have any new material; "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," from Evita, and the glorious '60s pastiche "Beautiful Stranger" are the only songs that haven't appeared on a Madonna album before. But it compresses her past 10 years worth of records into an hour of one peak after another. --Douglas Wolk

This is an awesome CD. Although I liked her Immaculate Collection album, I feel that this cd brings about a more mature Madonna. Her music is softer and her voice better modulated than her high shrilly voice from the 80's. I definitely do recommend this album to all Madonna fans. All of the songs on this cd I like with the exception of Erotica but 1 out 16 isn't all bad.

Only Half the Story...

GHV2 is a great album if you're looking for a collection Madonna's bigger hit singles. Unlike Immaculate Collection, GHV2 does not contain any bonus songs, which would have been nice, considering all of us have the albums these songs are on. Also, the edited versions are very obvious. Aside from all that, its a sweet slice of Madonna's 1990s work. Much of 1992's 'Erotica' was underrepresented, from that album is the title track and it's disco followup "Deeper and Deeper", which has gone from one of her lesser known hits to one of her finest over the years. I thought the omission of "Rain" was odd, even though it was on the ballad collection 'Something to Remember' in 1995. Even though it wasn't a huge hit like another 'Something to Remember' track, "Take a Bow", "Rain" is one of her best songs. I also love "Bad Girl", but maybe the tracks were chosen by Madonna or really were based on sales. That would explain why 'Ray of Light's "Nothing Really Matters" is left off and "Bedtime Story" was included. Interesting. So although my real problem is the lack of new songs, I have no problem with a "greatest hits" album, and while her 90s work doesn't quite match the giddy charm and fresh irreverence of 'Immaculate Collection', it does highlight Madonna's best moments, such as the mega selling "Take a Bow", the big comeback singles "Frozen" and "Ray of Light", the instant classic "Music", and strenghtening somgwriting in such songs as "Drowned World (Substitute for Love)" and "What it Feels Like for a Girl". All I can say is we're just waiting on that nice comprehensive boxed set we're hoping she will one day release.
