Madonna - Like a Prayer
Like a Prayer Review
Considered by many to be the Material Girl's most mature effort of the '80s, Like a Prayer upped the ante of controversy with its gospel-infused title track and the singer's emotional confessions throughout. It also unveiled the hit "Express Yourself," which ushered in the era of Madonna as a "stainless steel sexual icon." Musically, Prayer showcased her burgeoning songwriting prowess, with the beautiful "Oh Father" and the perky pop of "Cherish." Besides a throw-away collaboration with Prince ("This Is Not a Love Song"), the CD stands as one of her strongest works, eschewing the strong dance beat influences from her past--she saved that for the remixes--and concentrating instead on melody and structure. Like a Prayer also gave a hint of things to come with the delightful "Dear Jessie" displaying a maternal side worthy of her name. --Steve Gdula

Awesomely creative and fun pop music - Madonna strikes again!

Now when someone asks you whether you like Madonna, you're going to get strange looks if you say yes and aren't a girl. However, despite any guilty pleasure status Madonna may have for males, anyone with an open mind will recognize just how great of an artist she is (well...singer - she doesn't actually write or play any of the instruments). "Like A Prayer" is one of many classic pop albums by Madonna, and even though it sounds slightly dated (due to the 80's sound), it's still very high quality stuff. Madonna herself has a very energetic, fun and sexy voice that greatly enhances any song in which she sings - she's definitely extremely likable. The lyrics themselves are also well-written and fun to pay attention to - the hit "Like A Prayer" is a great example of a song that you'll probably love singing along to, too. Musically it doesn't sound like any other band ever, and it's distinctly 80's, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's very well produced and very creative - a lot of heart and soul was put into this album along with many of her other ones. She's essentially the female version of Prince (sonically - again, she doesn't play anything). If you like any Madonna song in the slightest, or if you like pop songs at all, then this album will greatly satisfy you! Absolutely recommended!

Highlights include:

the rest is great, too
