Johnny Cash - Unearthed
Unearthed Review
Over the course of five mesmerizing CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be. Four discs feature previously unreleased tracks from the famed Rick Rubin-produced sessions. Through their inconsistencies and quirks (and, more often than not, brilliance), they shed light on how Cash's final records were shaped, edited, and produced. Here we get some creative pairings: Fiona Apple providing guest vocals on Cat Stevens' "Father & Son," and the late Joe Strummer duetting with Cash on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." Neither are the definitive statements that some of Cash's covers from this period are (his glorious takes on Nick Lowe and Danzig, to name just two), but they're still very much worth hearing. Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart. "Banks of the Ohio," Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Chunk of Coal," Stephen Foster's "Hard Times," and the entire disc of previously unreleased gospel tunes are powerful statements, tunes where you feel privileged to hear Cash--despite declining health and failing voice--sing one more time, the way he wanted. The last disc of this monumental set is a "best-of" compilation of tracks that did make it on the American individual discs, a reminder of just how groundbreaking these sessions were. Perhaps the biggest highlight in this awe-inspiring set is its vast liner notes, a loving collection of essays and recollections that highlight the history and stories behind this eclectic array of songs. --Jason Verlinde

5th Disc is a turnoff

I'm dying to get this set. I'm sure it's unbelievably great. But the fifth disc is a real turn-off. Anyone buying this will already own everything on this fifth disc.

Why don't they issue the first three discs individually like they did with the fourth disc (My Mother's Hymnbook)? I'd buy all four on the first day of release.

I just hate rip-off projects like this one. It just doesn't make sense. It's almost as bad as the Beatles "Capitol Albums" ripoff.

Exceptional and Unforgettable.

What a great privilege to add yet another 5-Star rating to this exceptional and touching work. What a experience! The new paperback issue of Johnny's autobiography was often referred to while listening to this amazing, 5-CD set. So many highlights. Some cuts seemed to particularly stand out. CD 1: "Just The Otherside of Nowhere." You'd swear John's in the room. Kris sitting right there beside him. Listening. CD 2: John and June singing from Heaven. The song? "As Long As The Grass Shall Grow." CD 3: "Redemption Song." The late Joe Strummer. Particularly fine on this duet with Johnny. "The Man Comes Around." He wrote this song near the end of his life. CD 4: All 14 songs. God Bless you John. CD 5: Almost all the songs again, but "Hurt," "Bird On A Wire" and "We'll Meet Again" linger in your mind. Many other great cuts appear throughout the 5 CD's, however. Thank you Rick Rubin. And thank you Johnny. You made a difference.

An investment worth every penny

I was visiting my Mother in Raleigh, NC over Christmas holiday in 2003. When she asked me what I wanted as a Christmas gift, this box set was in my mind. It had just been released that very first day of my visit and the price tag made it an inviting gift request. Remembering my youth, when my parents tired of buying music for me as gifts ( "You have more music than a person could listen to in his whole life!" ), I hesitated asking Mom. But we're both older now, she's a widow, and any request from her only son was more than OK with Mom.

When I took it back to her house we spent a quiet afternoon listening to Disc 4, the hymn music. Mom's devout and I figured she wouldn't hate it. She actually loved it, humming along to many of the songs she recognized from a lifetime of churchgoing. It was one of the most wonderful times I spent with my Mom since I was a child in her lap.

What does this sappy story have to do with a review of Cash' "Unearthed"? Nothing really. Except that music as wonderful and good as Johnny Cash's American Recordings can become part of the things we remember most fondly in life.

Do yourself a favor. If you have a loved one who might not be able to afford this box set, buy it for them as a gift. If they are a Johnny Cash fan, it may be one of the best gifts they ever receive.
