Johnny Cash - The Gospel Collection
The Gospel Collection Review
At Sun Records, Sam Phillips didn't allow the Man in Black to record his beloved gospel songs, so when Johnny Cash moved over to Columbia he got down to the Lord's business rather quickly, recording two sacred records within his first three years at the new label. This 24-song collection combines 1959's Hymns by Johnny Cash and 1961's Hymns of the Heart, making it more cohesive and compelling than most of the other Cash gospel sets. Cash adds a few originals to a variety of older well-known and obscure gospel songs. Along the way, the steady churn of the Tennessee Two is embellished by piano and vocal chorus, but it's Cash's own solemn and earnest readings that truly make this collection an essential entry into his catalog. --Marc Greilsamer

Johnny sings with conviction on this recording. There's some great songs here, a few maudlin tunes and arrangements, but if you like Country Gospel, this is definitely worth a listen. Nobody but Johnny Cash could sing these songs and deliver their essential truth. I play this old gem when life seems dark, and it helps.

Great CD For New Believers

The lyrics are very inspirational and the messages of each song are easy to understand. One of my favorite songs is "These Things Shall Pass". I truly admire the fact that several songs on this Gospel music collection were written by Johnny Cash himself. The man really came around!!!

Should you ever find yourself down or dispirited, I heartily recommend that you put this CD into your player. "These things shall pass" is the best recommendation for anyone afflicted by the temporary downturns of life.

Overall, it's a melodious and highly addictive record. I recall playing it at work and one of my co-workers, after initially making fun of me, requested that I replay it many times. We even used to sing "I've got shoes" together. That was his favorite song. It's a joyous endeavor and will be pleasing even for those whom the lyrics have no meaning.
