John Cullum - Urinetown (2001 Original Off-Broadway Cast)
Urinetown (2001 Original Off-Broadway Cast) Review
"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Good, But Over-hyped

I purchased this cd after reading numerous "glowing" reviews.

After listening a couple of times, however, I feel this score was a bit over-hyped.

Certaining, there are enjoyable moments & the premise is interesting, but there are only a few songs that are memorable:

Urinetown
Don't Be The Bunny
Run, Freedom, Run!

Maybe you had to see the show?

Run, Freedom, Run ... Then Run Away!

This cd's got one good song (Run, Freedom, Run) and the rest is stupid!

There are many things to say about this show, "Urinetown". Sure it's title is just awful. Adn the subject matter, about the rising cost of public toliets seems a bit ridiculous. But it really, really works.

Something that makes a musical really, really great is expert writing--but specifically NOT the one broadway ballad or showstopper. This musical is really good because every single note is written well--especially the choral parts and the instrumental parts. This sense of detail is what makes this show excellent.

Also, this musical isn't into itself. It's very different but it does not embrace it anymore than necessary.

Hunter Foster is enthusiastic, an excellent singer and Jeff McCarthy, who is sort of the narrator of the show, adds exactly what is necessary to his part, and nothing more. Jennifer Laura Thompson, I'm afraid, overdoes it a little.

Best songs are "Urinetown" (3), "Mr. Cladwell" (5), "Don't be the Bunny" (9), "Act One Finale" (10), "Run, Freedom, Run" (13) and "Why Did I Listen to that Man?" (14).
