Jo Dee Messina - I'm Alright
I'm Alright Review
Jo Dee Messina's 1996 hit, "Heads Carolina, Tails California," was a likable, upbeat slice of Hot Country that promised, at the least, more such work. Her sophomore album, I'm Alright, however, shows whatever edges Messina once owned to have been sanded off by the Nashville production machine. The we-can-work-it-out tone of "Heads Carolina" here becomes little more than feel-good, plucky hackwork. At the album's worst, when confronted with tragedy day after day in newspaper headlines, all Messina can do is throw up her hands and lament that "Even God Must Get the Blues." --Rickey Wright

A modern country masterpiece

This is an outstanding album, which has nothing whatsoever to do with traditional country, but who cares? It contains music of the highest quality, which can be played repeatedly, and established Jo among the front rank of contemporary country queens.

Three number one singles (Bye Bye. I'm alright and Stand beside me) and a number two (Lesson in leavin', a cover of the song which gave the late Dottie West her only solo number one) show that Jo had the support of the radio stations, while album sales prove that she had the support of the public. I love all those songs.

Of the other songs, I particularly like the other oldie (I know a heartache, first recorded by Jennifer Warnes). but every track is great - there is no filler on this album. Most of the songs are upbeat, but there is the occasional slower song to provide a change of pace.

Second Album's a Charm

This CD is awesome! I first heard Lesson in Leavin' on the radio. I liked the sound and lyrics of the song. It was something different than the usual music that fills country radio. I went straight out and bought this CD. 5 out of 10 songs on this album have gotten radio play. The other 5 songs arent bad. These songs are extremely catchy and will stick in your head. I highly reccomend this CD to anyone who likes up beat country that isnt too pop - flavored like Shania or Faith.
