Jo Dee Messina - Delicious Surprise
Delicious Surprise Review
On her fourth studio album, Messina, country's queen of hope and empowerment, roars back after a four-year hiatus, during which she went public with a stint at rehab and broke off a nine-year relationship with her fiancé. Those events stand at the center of two of the best ballads on the album ("It Gets Better" and "Sometimes Love Is Just Not Enough"), and please not only because Messina wrote (or cowrote) them from real-life struggles, but because the songs soften the numbing bombast that producers Byron Gallimore and Mark Bright bring to the rest of her repertoire. The singer--big-voiced, expansive, and as comforting as an old friend--is always a welcome presence on the radio, as she is on the album's first single, the upbeat and attitudinal kiss-off "My Give a Damn's Busted." What she needs is more songs like this that break her out of her usual mold (in addition to the aforementioned tracks that showcase her quieter side) and allow her to deliver a surprise or two. The ones offered here aren't quite as "delicious" as the album title promises, but even the most casual listener senses that Messina has so much spunk and grit that she'll gather them yet, her myopic producers be damned. --Alanna Nash

I purchased JO DEE Messinas DELICIOUS SURPRISE at the perfect time in my life. (November, 2005) I've been on my own for 6 mos. now. This is an entirely new situation for me and I'm 47-years-young. (They tell me I look more like 31-35.) It seems every song on the album was written especially for me. Not only me, but for "all us gals" in this world who know who we are, where we are and where we've been. There's that essence of sisterhood. NOT GOING DOWN applies to me in my `living on my own' experience. This song struck me like wOw. I like playing it over and over again, while singing into an air microphone. (No need for the brush anymore :-)~) I relate to EVERY song on this album. But I'll mention one more. MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED applied to a paticular situation I was in when it first came out. The very first time I heard it over the radio I was like "D*mn this is exactly me!!!" ... and those words continued to apply in the following several months. So I can say without a doubt JO DEE Messina has been there for me month after month after month even when I didn't know it... and I appreciate both her and her song writers immensely. Oh, almost forgot. Over-all "life IS good". Thanks Jo Dee

If you like it REAL then check out the original version of Delicious Surprise on Beth Hart's Screamin' for my Supper CD. Though she is not overly mainstream, Beth Hart deserves the nod...and hopefully the royalties to back it up.

I bought this CD after seeing JoDee in concert. She introduced several of her new songs, and normally new songs at a concert don't go over, however the songs she introduced from this album were amazing and I had to have the CD.

Once again, JoDee offers songs to lift you up and inspire you. In addition to the hit "My Give a Damn's Busted", she offers songs to keep you going such as "Not Going Down", "Delicious Surprise", "Life is Good" as well as uplifting "It Gets Better".

The only thing I didn't like was the new physical image JoDee is portraying. Her music, however, continues to be on the mark.
