Jonathan Larson - Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast)
Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast) Review
Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way.

Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague of AIDS) Rent celebrates life among the young, sick, and unconventional. While Broadway shows are hardly the place for authentic portrayals of the latest marginalized hipsters, composer Jonathan Larson (who died at age 36, days before his musical opened) managed to sculpt vivid characters and scenes that bring Avenue A as close as it will ever come to 42nd Street. And by telling a socially relevant story of living without the guarantee of a future (renting, that is), Larson does his own little bit to define an X'ed generation. At worst, Rent is the Hair of the '90s.

For the majority of us who won't be seeing Rent anytime soon, the Original Cast Recording is more than just an after-show souvenir. Well-packaged with a complete libretto, the two-CD set is a worthwhile album separate of live performance. Full of songs that are funny and catchy, inspiring and touching, smart and hip and not overly sentimental, Rent mixes showtune pop with elements of rock, R&B, dance, gospel, and tango to make one of the best albums of the year--certainly the best rock opera in decades. La vie bohème, indeed. --Roni Sarig

I love rent, and I love this CD. I do think Mimi's voice is better in the movie, but lots of the good songs, such as Happy New Year, weren't in the movie. If all the songs you like are in the movie, then I would suggest getting that soundtrack. Don't get the highlights CD, it leaves off all the important songs.

A Powerful Rock Opera

This Is a very powerful musical. It deals with the issues of authority, rebellion, being yourself, drugs, homosexuality, and AIDS among a group of Bohemian New York artists...The lyrics are excellent, carrying a lot of emotion, and not even sounding sappy doing it. The vocalists are amazing, though I find Mimi's voice a little bit obnoxious. The songs are catchy, powerful, and damn good. I will say, however, that I actually prefer the movie's soundtrack. The tempo is a bit faster on that, and I think Rosario Dawson is better as Mimi, though, it is missing a few tracks, like Contact.

A POWERFUL Musical-

Probably the last "real" musical... this musical is all about American life in the 90s following the life of five friends as they express the drug culture, death, and AIDs while struggling to express themselves.

With a powerful, stirring score that anyone can relate to rich or poor- artist or doctor- "RENT" is bound to change you capturing the feelings of all humans-wanting to be know for something. An a all star cast- honestly you can't imagine anyone else playing these roles that brought them to stardom!
Not a bad track on this C.D. you are bound to find something you will like my favorites are "What You Own", "Finale A" and of course "Seasons Of Love." Wether your a fan of pop, rock, or Broadway this a CD to be enjoyed by anyone and anyone music fan. I find the music stirring, inspiring and heartbreaking at times.

"Rent" is what one might consider the "Hair" of a 90s or the "Les Miserables" of America- a mix of rock meets Broadway is a refreshing idea and makes the songs more enjoyable. Definately hit the buy now button trust me you'll LOVE this MUSICAL!

"There is only us... There is only this... forget regret or life is your's to miss. No other road... no day but TODAY."
