James Taylor - James Taylor: Greatest Hits
James Taylor: Greatest Hits Review
James Taylor's mid-'70s departure from Warner Bros. may be one of the best things that ever happened to the label; otherwise, it might not have been in such a rush to compile his Greatest Hits, one of the company's biggest sellers ever at 11 million and counting. Taylor's style, which all but defines the word diffident, has more backbone than it's often given credit for. Here, as surprisingly complex songs like "Carolina in My Mind" (in a newly recorded version) and "Steamroller" stack up, he sounds like an artist worth spending some time with. At the least, few of his singer-songwriter cohorts came up with a melody as lovely as "Sweet Baby James." --Rickey Wright

If you like James Taylor, you'll see everything you like here. If you don't already like James Taylor, nothing here will convince you to change. It has all his standards that you are used too, and is great for filling your iPOD.

James Taylor certainly deserves his Greatest Hits album. The smooth voice and guitar work stand out on every song. What makes the album even more fantastic is the collection of talented musicians who join him for these songs.

"Fire and Rain" has got to be my favorite. It's not your classic top-hit song. It's quiet, it's sad, it sort of hopeless. It really sounds like James is at the end of his rope, having lost his last chance. "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend - but I always thought that I'd see you again."

Some of the other songs are more upbeat - the "Shower the People" and "How Sweet it Is" are both much more encouraging about life. You've got "Carolina in my Mind" - anybody who has wandered the rolling hills and gorgeous coastlines of this area can truly relate.

I'm a fan of Carole King, and I really like this version of "You've Got a Friend". James' voice is so quiet and soothing, you really get a sense that he'll be there for you.

Perfect for an evening by the fire, sipping that glass of wine.

I imagine this is one of the best selling collections in history. I mean, who doesn't like this guy? He's like "John Denver", great songs that always put a smile on your face. These are mostly his best and biggest hits. 12 songs of just simply good and easy music. Included is "Fire and Rain", "Carolina in My Mind", and the almost rockin' "Mexico". Practically all of these are sing-a-longs. I could also suggest the recent "Best of James Taylor". That includes every song on this cd, plus 8 more. It might be the better deal. Whichever one you choose, when you play it, you'll know that "You've Got A Friend".
