James Brown - Star Time
Star Time Review
It would seem impossible to summarize James Brown's contribution to R&B--to American music--in a mere four compact discs, but somehow Star Time does it. This boxed set charts Brown's early rise as a hard-hitting R&B-styled vocalist ("Please Please Please," "Try Me") and shows how his bandleading skills (one can't forget inventive players like saxophonist Maceo Parker, bassist Bootsy Collins, drummer Jabo Starks, and many others) changed the face of soul and invented funk in the '60s and early '70s with impeccably timed ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"), highly rhythmic ("I Can't Stand It"), primal ("Licking Stick Licking Stick") hits. The box also does a definitive programming job on Brown's more spotty later years--another plus. This is where beginners should start, but several extended versions and rarities (like "Papa," raised an octave on original release, at normal speed) make it a must for completists too. --Don Harrison

They say Elvis Presley is the "king" ,,,but can Elvis get superbad like James Brown? Can he Dance half as good? Did Elvis work as hard. Elvis couldnt do 8 or 9 minute dance marathons.
Whatever the consensus is...James Brown is a legend. All the new rap and dance and hip hop cant hold a candle to the energy and spirit James transmitted through the microphone. I always get energy when I listen to the Star Time Box Set. It is definately worth the money you spend. All his best songs are extended to original length,,the way it should be. I cannot dis any of his music, he is just that good. His highlight years were 1968-72.
He really worked hard, you can tell just by listening. His music doesnt grow stale because it is so dynamic and real. In any case dont waste time reading the reviews if you dont have the box set..... go and buy, it's worth it.. trust me.

I hate box sets.

Most recently, I was extremely disappointed with the Nirvana box--which contains very little of the vital, infectious music that I associate with Nirvana. While it may be unfair to compare Nirvana's b-sides and outtakes to the best material in the James Brown catalogue, I can't help but be underwhelmed by any box set that doesn't have the words "Star Time" printed on the cover.

I don't really even consider this a box set. I think of it as four of my favorite individual cd's. Each cd plays like it was originally intended to be sequenced that way by James Brown his own damned self.

Yes. Discs one and four may not be quite as solid as numbers two and three. But that's a little bit like saying that Abbey Road isn't quite as good as Revolver. It's all good people.

Amazon lists other cd's as the "essential" recordings of James Brown. While Foundations of Funk is an excellent compilation, this is a better place to start your JB education.
