Gary Burton - Like Minds
Like Minds Review
Vibist Gary Burton has been collaborating with pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny since the mid-'70s, and it shows. The three have a strong intuitive sense of each other's lines and sound and can enhance the music in myriad, subtle ways. Having a great rhythm section doesn't hurt either, and bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes are two of the very best. On Like Minds they have created an excellent CD: a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination. With the exception of the George Gershwin piece, "Soon," the disc features all original compositions, with considerable thought given to distinguishing each soloist despite the surface similarity of their nimble, bouncy styles. Like minds, perhaps, but each possesses a singular voice and the ability to merge it creatively with others. --Wally Shoup

This is EZ listening music to play when company is over.

This is EZ listening music for playing, as background music, when company is visiting (especially for vistors who don't care for jazz). For the "real" Gary Burton, I would recommend Duster. Duster is an astonishing album that seems to have some "extra-musical" qualities. Each piece in Duster is not merely like listening to a tune, but like taking a sort of journey. I saw the Gary Burton Quartet perform the music from Duster in circa 1969, when they opened for Cream at the Fillmore Auditoreum in San Francisco. By "Cream," I mean Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce. Duster is the album to get, not the album called "Like Minds."

Turbo fantastic and nearly flawless... performance-wise anyway.

This album is a must have. Dave Holland and Roy Haynes hold down the time so effortlessly. Every player complements every other player so well that if someone is phrasing in triplets or sixteenths the rest of the group is really feeling that time too. It's hard to describe but the interplay on this disc is about as good as it gets and it feels so natural and swinging. The song selection was well planned. There are very slow tunes as well as very fast ones, making this a good album to listen to straight through. Unfortunately the mix is not as good as it should be. Pat and especially Dave sound particularly muddy. But I bet it would be difficult to mix for three chordal melody instruments, piano, vibes and guitar with such similar overtones. Still, this disc would be worth buying just for Dave... or Pat... or Chick... or Gary... or Roy. Everyone is so turbo-fantastic!
