Garth Brooks - Scarecrow
Scarecrow Review
Nearly a decade ago, Garth Brooks's ability to incorporate '70s pop material and arena rock into his act made history (and controversy) as he propelled country to its pinnacle of success. One fact remains in 2001. When he simply rears back and sings (in the spirit of longtime pal Chris LeDoux), the results are often fresh and natural. That's the case on the Beatle-esque "Wrapped Up in You," "Thicker Than Blood," and the trite but catchy blue-collar bopper "Big Money." Alas, that slicker, more calculated material is never far away. Awash in melodrama, "The Storm" (a bathos-ridden variant on "The Thunder Rolls"), "Mr. Midnight," and "Pushing Up Daisies" each run four-plus minutes and seem longer. The hyperactive bluegrass romp "Don't Cross the River" seems less homage than a nod to the successful O Brother soundtrack. While duets with George Jones and Trisha Yearwood have merit, one wonders who really needs who. All this might have been cutting edge in 1992. Now it simply seems long in the tooth. --Rich Kienzle

Its a B Double E Double R U In. What an album, this has something for everybody, and its like in the recording of this album, Garth said to himself, Im going have fun, but I have a message to, the last song sums up what all Garth fans are hoping. "When you come back to me again" Lets hope Garth does
country music needs and music needs him.

Helped pay for his retirement party

It is quite obvious why GB retired after this. It lacked feel. Although it wasn't as blue-grass as S, it still has too much root in it. The disc was very dispointing to both the recording label and GB. 'Don't Cross The River' reminds me of GS's LOTWTTP, lacking in feel and authority. The songs on this disc just aren't catchy, and 'Wrapped Up In You' seems forced. Everybody follow!

It's interesting that Mr. Brooks used to be in advertising. Because he has done for country music what the Saatchi brothers did for the advertising industry. And that is to make it big business.

And while county fairs, not stadiums, are the true venue of country music, you can't deny how he's transformed the industry.

In recent years George Jones, the most colossal talent in country music, has befriended Brooks. Maybe Garth will start doing more country shows and fewer rock concerts.
