Review of Gal Costa : Hoje: 2005
Celebrating the Singer's 60th Birthday. Produced by Cesar Camargo Mariano. Unpublished Songs by Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso, Among Others.

Users's Reviews - Gal Costa : Radically conservative
I enjoyed the album very much. It was produced by Cesar Camargo Mariano, a very talented man himself, the famous arranger of Elis' records and known in some circles for his own material. The decision was to recreate the 70s studio while choosing only new songs from contemporary young songwriters.

The songwriters will be obscure to you: Peri, Junio Barreto, Hilton Raw... but they all have their own independently released albums and are very talented musicians and singers themselves. Look them up. It is really worth the effort.

Gal sounds great here. Her voice is in perfect shape and always will be. She is a singing machine.

The only problem I found was the overuse of background choirs. Very distracting and of questionable taste. But cool in a retro kinda way anyway.

It is an album or purists. No electronica, no crossovers. It is as MPB album, made like it is still 1974. The irony comes from the fact that Gal herself didn't have an album that sounded like this in the 70s. She had to wait for the 00s to make it...
Your latest reviews - Gal Costa : THE MAGNIFICENT GAL COSTA !
Five HUGE Stars! Truly one of the greatest singers in Brasil, with a voice so beautiful, it's breathtaking in and of itself. But it doesn't stop there. Gal Costa has been one of the major forces in Brazilian music since the 1960's Tropicali movement to this very day, sampling many music styles along the way. This CD has some of her very best stuff and be careful, you may also fall in love with Gal Costa, like me. If you need an introduction to her music, this is a wonderful place to start. Gal has demonstrated that she can sing ANY form of music out there and is one of the Top Three MPB singers EVER. You can quote me!

The best of the best, 'Pieces D'Resistance' begin with "Luz do Sol" (Light of the Sun), a powerful performance demonstrating her incredible voice, nonpariel phasing, and wonderful sense of time. Notice how her upper register is beautiful and crystalline. A voice to die for! Then move to "Dom de Iludir" (Gift for Deception) and "Só Louco" (So Crazy), two of my very favorites, featuring wonderful arrangements, musicianship, and vocal choruses. The fast samba "Canta Brasil" and the ballad "Baby" are wonderful songs as only Gal can do them.

But the major 'Piece D'Resistance' has to be the South American folk/ethnic song, "India", an incredible Tour de Force performance that demonstrates the total vocal capabilities of Gal Costa in one magnificent swoop. A breathtaking piece using native instruments and a slow, building performance from calmness to the height of intensity. It makes me want to raise my arms and fists in exhultation at the end and break into applause. It's one of the Greatest Performances in the History of MPB, but it's not traditional MPB. It's 'Gal Costa Music'. And you can quote me, again. Five HUGE Stars for the lady who first taught me what great MPB singing was all about. The Magnificent Gal Costa!!
