MACHO--The Finest Showcase of 'Contemporary Guitar'

The next Gabor Szabo/Bob James collaboration proved to be a winner. The compositions range from the driving Latin Beat of "Macho" (which on earlier albums, solo and with others, went under other various names), along with a slightly longer alternate version added to the CD, to florishes of his Hungarian Heritage on "Hungarian Rhapsody #2" and "Transylvanian Boogie". As well as the Rhythm & Blues of "Ziggetty Zag" and Contemporary Jazz of "Time" (later re-titled "Alicia"), and "Evening In The Country"--which was sitting in the vault, before finally getting added to this CD. And of course, the 'unique Szabo trademark of covering the pop song' in Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man", ably covered by Gabor in the sentimental and gentle melancholy way Phoebe had done, herself. Szabo and James hired a good stable of musicians like Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson and Scott Edwards on bass, Harvey Mason on drums (who wrote "Ziggetty Zag", and incorporated bits of it on his own solo works), Percussionists Ralph MacDonald and Idris Muhammed (who ususally plays drums and whose real name is simply Leo Morris), as well as another guitarist, Eric Gale. John Faddis plays trumpet and flugelhorn and Tom Scott joins on sax and lyricon, while Bob James played the keyboards & arranged with help from Ian Underwood on synthesizers. In all, a fine effort with arrangements that really gel around the immortal cog or hub of this band, Gabor Szabo. Who at this time, showed that there was no limit to what he could do in The World Of Modern Jazz. While this may be on vinyl in most Szabo collections, it is definitely worth upgrading to CD for, just to get the two bonus tracks and some new liner notes (though replacing the original ones about 'Jazz' by Gene Lees). Lots of Hot Playing! Get This While It's HOT, too!!
