Szabo's First Notes Ever Recorded Are Impressive!

Here's an excellent showcase of Hungarian Guitarist Gabor Szabo's amazing talent. "Yesterday" kicks off the album in a unique way--you're not just hearing ANY remake of the most covered Beatles tune. "The Last One To Be Loved" is a Bacharach/David number, Szabo covers competently, too. The gentle "Echo Of Love" is played a little TOO delicately and comes on just too soon to be a song to "relax to", after that second track served that function. But "Gypsy '66" is an earlier song Gabor did with Chico Hamilton, "Lady Gabor", done as a shorter piece with some new life into it. Gary Mc Farland (who probably produced this album, though remaining uncredited), wrote "Flea Market" and did a version of it, himself, much faster than the slow version you hear Szabo doing. "Walk On By", another Bacharach/David-written song does great on the instrumental scale, almost competing with Dee Dee Warwicke's version, though not intending to sound like muzak. The Beatles' "If I Fell" also follows suit, and so does the fast-moving "Gypsy Jam". And his not-so 'show-bizzy' take on "I'm All Smiles" should make you 'all-smiles', too! GYPSY '66 is in all a very smart and satisfying listen. Nice how Gabor kept the compositions contained and avoided the mystical and psychedelic trappings his later releases would contain, but not in any bad kind of way. Here, he just wanted to make his Introductory Effort very simple and plain.
