The Fugees (Refugee Camp) - The Score
The Score Review
Their remake of "Killing Me Softly" was the hit, but that's only the beginning of the story. A hip-hop trio whose talents reach out into the world of the pop song (Wyclef Jean is a fine guitar player, and Lauryn Hill's a heck of a singer), the Fugees are also all distinctive, inventive rappers--you find yourself waiting for each of them to take the next verse in turn. The beats are the familiar crossed-armed boom-bip, but the group's understated grooves and subtle effects lie low in the mix. Aside from two kicky covers of classics (the other is Marley's "No Woman, No Cry"), The Score's focus is on the stars' rhyming with the free-form grace of performance poets and showing that they've thought deeply about the issues they raise. --Douglas Wolk

groundbreaking hip hop, reggae and soul

this album not only touched on hip hop, reggae and soul but also elements of world music and acoustic music and it gets very political at times while romantic at others. This was the best hip hop record to come out in the 90's along with lauryn hill's miseducation. I can't wait for the fugees to get back together so wannabes like black eyed peas are forgotten.

It's just crazy how talented the Fugees are. Lauryn, Wyclef and Pras brought together a astounding album. Wyclef's eccentricity, Lauryn's intimacy and Pras's masculinity are always their to give a unique feeling every time you hear it. I never grew tired of listening to this album because of the different styles used. I've had this album since it came out in '96 but I've been sleeping on it for past eight years. It is only recently due to my wariness of the ongoing hip hop creativity drought that I brought this back out. I remembered when it was first released "The Score" was hyped so much that I didn't think it could possibly live up to the praise, but they prove me wrong. This is a classic! I knew it was good after listening to it carefully from the beats to the intelligent lyrics to the groove; all the elements that make an album great are here. It can be debated that there are better rappers in the game but no hip hop album can compete with originality of this group. I do hope they get back together and to make another classic.

Album pocinje zaista dobro i uverljivo posle uvodne Red Intro, sledi How Many Mics, onda kultna Ready Or Not ujedno i najjaca pesma na albumu, nadovezuje se nista manje bolja Zealots u kojoj W.J sija. To masi nije smetalo, a ni "vajnim" kriticarima. Sledi pesma The Score sa besmislenim tekstom ali odlicnim ritmom, a onda i The Mask koju nazalost Fugees nisu izbacili kao singl i kao takva nikada nije bila zapazena onoliko koliko bi trebalo. Cowboys, veliki promasaj i najslabija tacka albuma, za kojom sledi No Woman No Cry i napokon Manifest/Outro koji zatvara album.
I to je to!
Imamo znaci How Many Mics, Ready Or Not, Fu-Gee-La, i The Mask.
