Frank Sinatra - Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years
Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years Review
A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's "New York New York," focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would any decent collection. For a compact Reprise-era sampler, try either this one or something from the Greatest Hits series. --Gavin McNett

If our world ever lost this music, it would stop spinning on its axis. Serious.

Frank Sinatra was one of the best if not the best singer of the last century. He started off as a teen idol but continued his remarkable career through the 40's 50's 60's 70's and had loads of hits and became more loved with age it seems. Apart from singing, he also appeared in quite a few movies. However singng was made Frankie what he is remembered for, his laidback jazzy swing style was something he'll always be number 1 for. He already had his first number #1 in 1940 and through the years he came to record classic songs from famous composers such as Irving and Gershwin and even samba on "Girl from Ipanema" that unfortunately doesn't appear here. However, the trademarks like "My Way", "New York New York", "Thats' Life", Something Stupid", "Strangers in the Night" "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Fly Me to the Moon" all appear here which is good.

Frankie collections are always very difficult to make and many of them include some trademarks but misses others and feel inadequete in the end. To make a fair collection with most of the big hit singles, you'll need atleast 3 CD's. This collection got the highlights, ofcourse it could have been better if it had been longer, but what is good with this is that it reflects songs from a particular era early 60's to late 70's early 80's and for that reason it feels adequate and enjoyable. Perhaps those years in the 60's and 70's was his best, he had grown up and was a middle age man but his voice was always wonderful and the songs he recorded through those years are among the most significent he ever did.

This album focus on the most obvious hits, so both casual and real fans will like it. It's a good step to start if you want to get into Frankie's music. Highly Recommended. If you want something contemprary, check Michael Bublé, he also sings many Frankie classics and he's got alot of attention lately for his fine jazzy voice. Either way, this album is a good start.

I am not a Sinatra fan. I'm middle-aged now, but I still say that the best rock'n'roll creates a level of energy, excitement and drama that nothing from either Tin Pin Alley or the big band composers can even come close to. Be that as it may, it is impossible to understand 20th century American popular culture
without knowing something about Sinatra (even for something as silly as knowing whose voice comes over the PA at the end of Yankee games, or getting Phil Hartman's old Saturday Night Live routines). Well, this gives you all the big ones on one CD - "My
Way", "Strangers in the Night", "That's Life", "Love and Marriage"(hello Al and Peg), "Fly Me to the Moon", "My Kind of Town (Chicago is)", "Summer Wind", and yes, young Yankee fan, "New York, New York".

Granpa probably wouldn't be very impressed with this, but be sure to get a copy for your nephew - he might roll his eyes at first, but he will definitely thank you later.
