Frank Sinatra - Sinatra at the Sands
Sinatra at the Sands Review
Pop this on, close your eyes, and you'll be instantly transported back to the Vegas of 1966. The Sands Hotel was still the "class joint" where Sinatra and his Rat Pack buddies partied, held court, and occasionally even performed. This priceless document (Sinatra's first official live album) captures the Chairman of the Board in performance mode, ably supported by conductor-arranger Quincy Jones and Count Basie and his Orchestra. The set list comprises 16 Sinatra classics--including "Come Fly with Me," "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "Angel Eyes"--along with two Basie instrumentals and some seriously un-P.C. stage banter. Essential. --Dan Epstein

Enjoyable Sinatra album - relive the glory days of Vegas

Although I am a ute (youth) compared to the Sinatra fans out there, I can say that this is a great album for a great sense of what made The Chairman so enjoyable.

This concert recorded at the Sands Hotel in the 1960's was recorded with the Count Basie providing backing. This alone is pretty special.

Sinatra comes in making jokes, singing, and interacting with an appreciative audience.

Here my favorite is "Get me to the church on time." Compared to the Sinatra in Paris album, this is far better for an overall experience. Along with the compilation albums from Capitol and the Reprise records, this is a nice addition to your OVERALL music collection, and I believe a must for Sinatra fans of all ages.

Frank takes you through all moods - go back in time...

This essential album shows you Frank's act , complete with a monologue , which is the only part I pass by as I'm interested in hearing him sing , not tell jokes .

His voice is more lived in , but his ability to communicate is not diminished .

The songs themselves are beautifully rendered - there are ballads and swingers , plus saloon songs . The Basie band are enjoying themselves immensely and that comes across plainly .

This would be a good introduction to the live Sinatra .
We had it on in the background at our wedding party and it created a great feeling in the room .
Let Frank transport you back to 60's Vegas - get the martinis ready and dim the lights !
A record for a party - dancing or dinner .
Try it out and hear great entertainers doing just that .

Greatest Live Sinatra Record

Here you go...Sinatra at the Sands...every wished you could be there in Vegas? I know I do, and this record is just about the closest you'll ever get to that dream. Not only do we hear Sinatra performing at the peak in his career, but we also get a heavy dose of Count Basie and his orchestra backing him up. The sound quality is crystal clear, and the historical significance of this recording is not measurable. Sinatra and his friends OWNED and RAN Vegas in the 50's and 60's, and this album takes a peek into that world of glamour, fame, money, booze, cigarettes, and an infinite supply of beautiful women.

Probably the most noteworthy element is the commentary and monologue by Sinatra. He jokes with the crowd, hits on women, and tells stories about growing up in Hoboken, NJ, as well as parties with Dean Martin. Frank even ranks on Dean: "Dean Martin has been stoned more times than a United States embassy; (applause and laughs); I don't know what you were applauding for...did you want to stone more embassies? I don't know about this bunch!" Sinatra is totally calm and cool and we can hear just how comfortable he feels as a performer in this specific setting. We don't hear this with most modern acts as they tour from city to city. Rarely, except for some moern jazz, do we hear something from an artist who regularly plays a specific venue. I feel this adds a strength to the music.

As far as the songs go, we a great mix. There are a few hits such as 'I've Got You Under My Skin,' 'My Kind Of Town,' 'Luck Be a Lady,' 'Fly Me To the Moon,' and 'It Was a Very Good Year.' To newcomers, it is apparent that Sinatra doesn't necessarily sing the same song in the same manner during each performance. He adds in new words, or begins phrases at odd times, but the personality he puts into the vocals make up for what would otherwise be out of place. There are also some less popular songs here that are definitely worth checking out like 'Where or When' and 'The Shadow of Your Smile.'

In general, this recording serves two major purposes. First of all, it's just about the best Live Sinatra you'll ever hear, and secondly, it is an important piece of history...almost like a scene in a comic book of a snapshot in time. This album will bring you back to that place.
