Frank Black - Honeycomb
Honeycomb Review
Those having witnessed Frank Black exorcising his demons through screams and wails onstage with the Pixies will stop for a double-take when they hear this, an album the frontman recorded live in Nashville just days before the band launched its 2004 reunion tour. He sounds like George Jones with a hangover. Stripping away the ear-splitting feedback and lyrics about spaceships, Black teams up with a group of dust-caked local musicians, whose collective resumes include stints at Stax Records, Muscle Shoals and American Studios, for a set of songs that are beautiful and warm--even when on "Another Velvet Nightmare," he mournfully sings, "Today I felt my heart slide in my belly/ So I puked it up with liquor." --Aidin Vaziri

Honeycomb is really good, in the Blonde On Blonde kind of way! good songs and orgaNIC musicianship, and honest singing and vibes. this is a really good album! sounds like it could have been released in the 60s/70s. it really UN-sucks! and that means alot in these times! a wonderful cd! good songs and good musicians and good recording. very special stuff!!!! Frank Black is one magical singer/songwriter. and this cd is his very special creation for us.enjoy!!!

Where have I been????

Wow. I just finished listening to this cd for the first time and it blew me away. It's my new favorite cd. Funny thing is, I have never heard one Frank Black song before (that I know of), and have never heard the Pixies. I have heard OF them, but have never bothered to get to know their music (even though Curt Cobain excitedly endorsed them). From what I hear, this disc is a departure for Frank Black, so I'm sure I can expect much different offerings if I dig into the Pixies catalog. But dig I will because I am smitten with this cd. Someone used the word "organic" to describe it-perfect wording. It's organic. It's also fresh, fun, and soulfully mature. I am positively thrilled to have discovered it. If you haven't added this cd to your collection, you are missing out on some great music.

Black Francis evolves...

I wasn't expecting too much when I got this album. As a die-hard Pixies fan, I was always drawn to Frank Black's solo albums, but when he hooked up with the Catholics, things took a turn for the worse, as far as I was concerned. Just found this album online on a whim and was blown away. Frank Black has dropped all the outdated punk pretense and delivers Honeycomb with a raw, organic, acoustic vibe that is uncharacteristic of his previous solo work. It is a more mature sound, but then again, aren't his original greatest fans maturing too???
