Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left to Lose
There Is Nothing Left to Lose Review
Riding the momentum of the hit single "Learn to Fly," which hit No. 1 on the modern-rock charts long before this album's release, the Foo Fighters' third record is unarguably its most refined and poppy. The ominous riff that the opens "Stacked Actors" (which sounds like something Kurt Cobain could have hacked out on Nirvana's gnarly In Utero) is pretty much a red herring. The 10 tunes that follow are a succession of hook-laden pop songs tarted up with guitarist-vocalist (and former Nirvana drummer) Dave Grohl's thick guitars and increasingly sugar-sweet vocals. Nearly every cut on There Is Nothing Left to Lose has the potential of following "Learn to Fly" up the charts. The production is big and friendly and songs like "Generator," "Aurora," and "Headwires" just melt in your mouth. And even though the Foo Fighters' latest is seductively sweet in sound, there are just enough rough edges and lyrical angst to keep things interesting. --Adem Tepedelen

Utterly OVERRATED and trendy! Boring and predictable!

My wife and I are avid music afficionados, with over 2,000 rock CD's alone (all genres). I heard so much about the Foo Fighters over the years, that I finally decided to play my wife's CD with an open mind. My conclusion: this stuff is far from groundbreaking, and sounds like any other predictable cheesy, no-talent garage band that loves to scream and play the same 10 chords over and over. I like rock that challenges the mind and displays unmistakable song writing craft. Something this CD does not do in any obvious way. My feeling is that the kiddies that listen to them are starstruck by Dave Grohl's past with Nirvana, and they automatically think his new band is going to be just as great. Don't waste your money on this formulaic predictable mediocre schlock rock.

foo fighters have amazed me over the years from the blistering self titled album with it's grunge/pop/rock feel too the acoustic rockin' the colour and the shape and now comes too this album "nothin' left to lose" you look on the front and you see "grammy award 2001 rock album of the year" and i thought to myself wow..if it's got a grammy it has too be good oh how wrong can a sticker be...this is far from being good..mildy average if i do say so...firstly what's with the nice and sweet guitars that remind me of busted "before they were even creating commerical music" and the lyrics some are brilliant then i started too wonder is the grohl man tryi' too be funny or seriuos because i couldn't really decide..
that said the opening track "stacked actors" is a full throttle drivin' song that's a foos classic that doesn't get much airplay live...the overall feel of the album is that it's forced and marketed for radio..not for the fans too sink their teeth into as it's just nothin' there and i feel ashameed too say that but there's nothin' here of worth to hold the torch for the great name of the foo fighters..
atleast the grohl man redemed himself with the next album "one by one" a classic this is by far not a classic a mediocre album made for the commerical radio fat cats...
