Evanescence - Fallen
Fallen Review
The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence’s songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band’s debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music’s sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

No matter what others will say, Evanescence is truly a great band. They somehow made their way into this mess of mainstream music even with their beautiful, unique sound (it's unique to MTV, anyway!). Mainstream rock bands, such as Evanescence, do not normally have female vocalists either, so that adds to it all. It's really neat, actually - the idea that a band this good would get the recognition that they do!
Onto Fallen though! It's a brilliant debut album, I can tell you that. In my honest opinion, there isn't one skippable song on this CD. Amy Lee has an absolutely amazing voice, the lyrics are very pleasing and deep, every song differs from the next, and the music blends so perfectly... If you don't at least try out this album, then you are missing out on a lot, for sure! Evanescence's music can be enjoyed by almost anyone. :)
Here's a song-by-song review of Fallen by none other than me (but you wouldn't have guessed that, right?). I like reading these things so I've decided to make one for other people like me to enjoy. Haha.

1. Going Under -- (4/5 stars)
Very nice way of opening Fallen! It's a catchy song, actually. I really love the guitars in it, and the fact that there's some nice piano music hidden in there makes me happy, too. :D It may not be the best track on the album, but it's definitely worth a listen (or a few listens...). Actually, if you can, try to view the video for this song! It's creepy... In a good way, of course.

2. Bring Me to Life -- (4½/5 stars)
In my opinion, this song is so overplayed! What's unfortunate is, if they hadn't literally played this song everywhere possible, then it would've had a very good chance at being the best track on this CD. It's still a great song, don't get me wrong! It just would've been better if I hadn't heard it hundreds of times before buying the album. :) In reality, everything about this song (even the male vocals) is strung together very nicely. Even if I have heard it more than enough times, I never skip it when listening to this CD.

3. Everybody's Fool -- (4/5 stars)
I find the choir throughout this song very nice - it adds to the song tremendously. The lyrics give you something to think about, too, which is good. Overall, this track is definitely above average, but if you listen to it too many times (which can easily happen), then it certainly does get old. So try not to do that. ;) Oh, and the video for this song is amazing, as well. Definitley check it out.

4. My Immortal -- (5/5 stars)
The first time I listened to this song, I cried. No joke - it literally brought tears to my eyes, and not too many songs can do that. It's a very, very beautiful song. And, I much prefer this version over the "band version" from the video. A sudden blast of loud instruments is just what this song doesn't need! It's an incredible song, and it doesn't require and ounce of rock in it to please listeners. :)

5. Haunted -- (4½/5 stars)
Sounds silly, but this song kind of freaked me out when I first listened to it! Haha. The music, the lyrics, the vocals... The title defines this song very well because it really does sound "haunted." It's a very unique song, and it's not hard to get into the mood that it tries to create. It's the shortest track on the CD, but it's definitely not the worst! It's delightfully spooky, as well, which is just my taste, hehe.

6. Tourniquet -- (3½/5 stars)
Technically, this is the only apparently Christianity-based song on Fallen, though it is rather nice to listen to. I know a lot of people that really like this song, but it's not as appealing to me. In fact, I find it to be the track I like the least. Though, I do like Amy's screaming of, "I long to die!" Haha, I'm weird like that, but I think it sets the mood quite effectively. And the end of this song nicely merges into...

7. Imaginary -- (5/5 stars)
...Imaginary! Definitely one of the best tracks on this CD, without a doubt. It's beautiful, powerful, and I, personally, can relate to the lyrics with ease. The music literally puts you into a "field of paper flowers with candy clouds of lullaby." They've just about perfected this song, honestly. It easily gets five stars from me.

8. Taking Over Me -- (4½/5)
At first, this song might seem rather average (it did to me), but if you pay closer attention to the music, you'll find that it is quite far from average, indeed! Everything goes together very smoothly in this song. The lyrics might strike one as being influenced by Christianity, but even if they were, they're quite a deal more subtle than Tourniquet's, and you can interpret them in any way you choose.

9. Hello -- (5/5)
Oh, this song is beautiful. The lyrics are sad, and the music supports that well. It's another song almost completely held up, music-wise, by piano. I can't even put it into words, really... It may be the best song on this album, in my opinion.

10. My Last Breath -- (4½/5)
I have a bit of an attachment to this song, but it's still a very different and enjoyable track either way. The music is very unique, I think, and the lyrics are very poetic. This song's got more of an orchestral sound to it, really. It's a beatiful blend of sounds, no doubt.

11. Whisper -- (3½/5)
A song about fear... Hey, I can totally relate! Haha. Well, I have to say, it's not a horrible song by any means, it just sort of lacks something. Can't really say what, though. The choir really helps the song move along, and especially the chanting in Latin (I think?) at the very end makes this song what it is. And, really? It ends Fallen on a good note (no pun intended).

So there you have it! I still stand by what I said... There isn't one skippable song on this album, no matter how hard you look. Even the songs I rated three and a half stars are above average! This is truly an outstanding album, and I highly suggest you look into all of Evanescence's previous works (their EP's and such) if you enjoy this CD. You can't buy any of their EP's anymore (for reasonable prices, anyway), but you can download the songs all over the 'net (I seemd to have the most luck at mylastbreath.co.uk). The band has said that it's perfectly fine to do that, so feel no guilt! :P (Just make sure you buy THIS album, as it's still very available!)

If you've read this whole review, then I congratulate you! It took me longer to write this thing than I thought it would, haha! I hope I've helped you in some way. :)

Hey, just for the fun of it, here are some other bands you can check out if you like Evanescence: Within Temptation, Gretchen, Unfinished Thought, Switchblade Symphony, and Flyleaf. There are pleanty of others, you just have to look! ;)

A stand-alone gem.

This is what we call "synergy," where the individual elements of a work combine to create an effect that is greater than what an analysis of the isolated components would suggest. In most dimensions, Evanescence's album 'Fallen' should be fairly unremarkable -- it's a heavily produced, computer-recorded pop-metal record entirely devoid of compelling instrumental work and without a single element that you haven't heard before. Its uniqueness lies in the way that it recombines those cast-off parts and, from them, puts together something of urgency, beauty, and power. It is one of the best albums of the last five years.

I hesitate to call 'Fallen' a rock or metal album, and "pop" doesn't quite seem right, either. It's more of a misfit that works on its own terms, and the apparent strategy is to play it flat-out, without irony. The phrase "musical drama" comes to mind, and indeed there are moments of an almost Wagnerian dynamic, with Amy Lee's vocals -- soaring, lilting, whispered, or pulled quivering from her body as if to spite herself -- against the backdrop of grinding nu-metal guitars and double-time drum beats. She and the band seem to play off one another, each throwing the other into sharp relief and creating an exhilarating sense of dynamic equalibrium, a sublime balance that's impossible with more conventional combinations of vocalist and instrumentation. The effect is thrilling and cathartic.

The soul of the album is in Lee's lyrics, which read to some like the stuff of a teenage girl's diary. If that sounds like an insult, think about it for a minute. To her credit, she writes from a position of wisdom and honesty, even as she's implying her greatest moments of vulnerability. It's a risk, and it pays off for her.

The songwriting team that created 'Fallen' is no more. I think of the album as a one-time shot at pulling off a record that I'd been waiting for all my life without realizing it. The new Evanescence album will likely be very different, and while that might bother some fans, I'm looking forward to it. Why should they try to make another 'Fallen'? They got it right the first time.

Good songs, but they all sound similar
3
it's a good cd, with some good songs, but each song is very similar to eachother, kind of like the strings in a guitar. They all have the same intsrumental type theme but with a slightyl different variation. Bottom Line- They found a song that worked, and repeated it through-out the whole cd.

If you like any of their songs, then you'll probably like this cd, if you dont like any of the songs youve heard by them you probably wont like this cd.
Check out blingo too, you could win the money to get this cd, its a search engine powered by google, you can find everything you need about it, and it being legitimate
