Eva Cassidy - Time After Time
Time After Time Review
Minus all the machinery that the music industry can put behind an artist, Eva Cassidy sang bewitchingly in Washington, D.C. and then died without fanfare in 1996, when she was a mere 33 years old. And then the world began hearing Cassidy, thanks largely to Songbird, a posthumous collection of locally released album tracks that went on to garner media attention, critical praise, and commercial success. This collection gathers both live and studio cuts delivered within warm, mostly acoustic settings; often it is simply Cassidy, her voice, and her guitar. Inside are some of Cassidy's best-executed covers, beginning with Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" and ending with a stellar rendition of the traditional gospel "Way Beyond the Blue." In between are heart-wringing versions of Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." What distinguishes Cassidy so completely is her offhand ability to transform songs beyond their initial character with a voice that brilliantly mixes an airy floating quality and an edge that you know can pop open to reveal a belt-it-out strength to rival the best in the singer's trade. --Andrew Bartlett
Time After Time Review
The 2000 release Time After Time is a collection of 12 previously unreleased Eva Cassidy performances, primarily studio recordings, Time After Time also includes four live tracks. This album continues the tradition set by previous Eva Cassidy releases, a mix of traditional favorites such as 'I Wandered by a Brookside' and more contemporary songs like the title track, a remake of the 1984 Cyndi Lauper hit. Not the best of Eva's

Her voice could make any song sound fantastic. This is just not one of my favorites of hers and I am sure that I feel this way because of the song selection. Some of them just don't work for me. However, her voice is just buttery and mezmermizing. I love singing to her songs at the top of my lungs.

Eva is hands down THE MOST TALENTED female singer of our time. I spread her music to everyone I can using her CD's as gifts and I hope that is a way of continuing her spirit and paying tribute to her insatiable talent. If you enjoy her music, please do the same! Her music can be loved by music lovers of all sorts and is something new and different than taking a bottle of wine as a hostess gift to dinner parties!

...but there needs to be more than the voice

I found the reviews for this CD and Ms Cassidy's other recording to be so enthusiastic, I had to listen. I ordered this recording and "Songbird". I will agree she had a great voice. She apparently was able to cover quite a range of musical styles and do all of them well. She had a lot of talent and it's sad it never had a chance to blossom or have a proper vehicle that could have carried it to the success she so richly deserved.

The unfortunate problem with this recording and with her other recordings I have heard is the voice is all there is. She was saddled with some mediocre musicians. The recordings are sometimes muddy and off-balance. There are technical problems in the engineering and these tapes would never have been allowed out of the studio under more professional guidance. There is also an unbalance in the material presented. Most recordings have some common thread or style that allows the music to flow from the first track through to the end. The flow here is not smooth.

Yes, I know the CD's are composed of the archive of material Ms Cassidy recorded prior to her death and that means there will be limitations. But this recording and, with the exception of "Songbird", the others I have heard have so many limitations, it's hard to consider them as anything but a mined archive that ultimately disappoints those interested in good music. "Songbird" sounds better and, because it is a sampler, flows better.

As much as Ms Cassidy's untimely death saddens me, the loss of the possibility of ever hearing her outstanding voice with the respectful recording and professional backing it deserved is even more depressing.
