Etta James - Her Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection
Her Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection Review
Whether she sings string-laden pop ballads, lively soul, or gritty electric blues, James's high-powered, enormously expressive voice displays a knack for passionate blues inflections. Emotionally charged ballads including "At Last" and "All I Could Do is Cry" find James blasting through the orchestra with unearthly wails and moans. "If I Can't Have You," a duet with Harvey Fuqua, drops the orchestra in favor of horn-driven R&B and "Something's Got a Hold On Me" is a gospel-flavored romp reminiscent of Ray Charles. A live version of Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" shows her raunchiest Chicago-blues style, and "In the Basement," with Sugar Pie DeSanto, is a funky workout. Also here are three classics from her soul-drenched 1967 Muscle Shoals sessions. --Marc Greilsamer

My favorite singer...

Etta James is one of a kind. In my opinion she is one of the greatest singers ever. Her voice is so expressive and she can use it in so many ways. This CD has it all: ballads, blues, R&B, a live track, and Etta backed by strings in a jazz setting. I bought this after seeing Etta sing on television and this disc served as a great introduction to her music. Just a warning though: if you buy this it won't be the last disc of hers that you buy. My sister used "At Last" as the first dance with her husband at their wedding (as many couples do) and it was amazing how many people young and old wanted to know who that great singer was in the song. Its a testament to her talent and the ability she has to reach people with her voice, which is the mark of a great vocalist.

Etta James - Her Best

I picked this CD by Ms. James because it had some faster and fun songs on it bedsides her ballads. She has a remarkable voice. Every once in while she reminds me of the raspy voice of Janis Joplin. You can feel her emotions on her her ballads.

If I Can't Have Etta

I absolutely HAVE to have some Etta James. If I don't , I get the shakes. This is my favorite disc. It has several songs from several different stages in her career. Grab yourself a drink, sit back in the recliner, turn off all the lights and play this disc. You will float to heavin in no time flat.
