Enya - The Celts
The Celts Review
Born Eithne Ni Bhraonain, this classically-trained pianist was kid sister in the musical family that became Clannad, joining the Irish band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals, sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent global hits, beginning with Watermark the following year. --Sam Sutherland

If you're the shallow sort who heard Enya's music after 'a day without rain' and only listens to the popular sort of thing you'll hate this CD. I say that as fair warning. For the rest of us, it's highly reccomended. The song for which the CD is named, captures the spirit of the whole beautiful CD, but only attempt if you are a seasoned Enya fan.

Enya Has Done Better

Don't get me wrong---I'm an Enya fan. When she good she's really good. But not this time. IF you buy this CD it will be for "To Go Beyond"---a lullaby that is by far the best thing on the recording. And it's on there twice: surprise surprise. The other titles are slickly done chord changes with Enya going "la la" in the background, or bridge music marooned without a main melody. Buy it to complete your Enya library, otherwise borrow it from a friend and save some dough. There isn't much on it.
