Enigma - Voyageur (Special Package)
Voyageur (Special Package) Review
Enigma, aka Michael Crétu, turns out more light electronic ambience on Voyageur, mixing in an occasional twist but sticking pretty close to his successful, easily digested formula. Since Enigma’s massively popular debut MDMXC A.D., Crétu has moved toward a more New Age/adult contemporary sound, culminating with 2000’s bland The Screen Behind The Mirror. As with that record, Voyageur’s weakest moments happen when Crétu puts his mediocre vocals front and center on tracks like "Total Eclipse of the Moon." Better are more beat-oriented songs like "Boum-Boum" that concentrate on seedier, sexier material and stay away from Crétu’s sappier instincts. While overall, Voyageur counts as an improvement over Mirror, Enigma still hasn’t found a replacement for the Gregorian chants and whispery techno that made MDMXC A.D. such a groovy sensation. --Matthew Cooke

I like Voyageur

I like Voyageur. I am generally a symphonic music listener; but I came to Enigma from a mix program called Music From the Hearts of Space, at www.hos.com.Here I first heard MXMXC AD, and I was hooked. I bought that CD and the next three. I collected all of the lyrics off the internet. But, in spite of this, I never quite knew what was going on in these "threaded" or related discs.

I really like Voyageur because M Cretu seems to have dispensed with lyrics to the greatest extent, and what we have left is the propulsive "EuroDisco dance beats" as described by Stephen Hill of HOS.

I almost mistakened it for an R&B album...

Like the review up-top says...the vocals are what throws the album off. Cheesy lyrics and synthesizer-like fuzzy vocals(think Daft Punk; which is fun at first but soon gets very annoying). But the beats are some of the best I've heard; thick, heavy and slow like they came from an R&B album. This album is very different from the others in that it is not as 'mysterious' or dark as the previous ones: You see the previous albums had a simple formula: Gregorian chants, a slow steady beat, ambient soundscapes one melody per song, and sparse vocals. This is more electronic(with a wide variety of sounds), more lyrics, lots of melody(!) and no Gregorian chanting. It has a somewhat 'happier' sound; if that makes sense. It represents a big turn in Enigmas sound. But if you didn't like this then you should stop being a fan now b/c the next album is going to be VERY different.
