from iceland which has hailed bjork and sigur ros comes
emiliana torrini. her music pretty much fits in the same
box as the above mentioned artists but she is a genius in
her own right. i have never heard more chill inducing
eery music before. her voice is like an icey angels' if
that is a good analogie. i swear if you were to go to outer
space and hear the celestial angels singing in the expanse
of the universe they would sound like emiliana. i suggest
not to listen to this cd in the cold because you will freeze.
the cd begins with "to be free" which is the most radio
friendly song here, granted this stuff isn't completely
experimental, "baby blue" has the most haunting especially
when she says.. "wishing you life away..." then chills come
down my spine. "dead things" is a nice jazz/trip-hop song that
would make even her highness bjork jealous.
basically if you like great chill out music and haunting
female vocals this album is for you. granted it is not
flawless, but since when is anything flawless? it it 'cool'
to describe it in one word and even though it was released
in 1999 it still holds strong tody in my collection. add this
to your collection too!

Salt Water Taffy

A very skillful debut which recalls every singer who wears their heart on their sleave. Neil Young comes to mind when I listen to the heartfealt voice of Torrini. Each song beautifully encapsulates the emotions of the singer and sharing in her nostalgia feels like painting a watercolor becauuse Torrini's imagery is that evocative and fluid. Overall, I am left with the haunting tones of sadness from a songstress creating a soliquy of her past through each song but Torrini's words also have an indubitable spirit and a crisp note of change as if the salt air of her island home has caused a puckering of the lips to blow a kiss goodbye and start afresh.
