Elton John - Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002
Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002 Review
This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'60s music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike. --Bill Holdship

A ton of hits!

I like the early music best and this CD package had it all and more. The later stuff is ok but I still listened to all of it. A good deal.

If you are looking at possessing the best this guy has done, this is the best version to own. Not only does this span from the very beginning to the present time, it's also been very well remastered for a great sound and it comes in a very cool digipak cardboard packaging with a nifty booklet to boot. The only downer for me is that two of my favourite tracks, "Blue Eyes" and "Empty Garden" are missing but I guess that's the price you pay when you have to squeeze tracks (34 of them) on 2 discs. I personally prefer his work up to "Sad Songs" and so I didn't care too much for the tracks after Track 5 on disc 2 but to be fair, all the tracks are fairly representative of Elton's career to date. Recommended if you want the best of Elton and not want to get all the albums.

I know what you're thinking. It's missing this song,or it's missing that song.Okay,I agree some of that brown stuff that comes from a backside on disc 2 could have been substituted for something like "Empty Garden","I Feel A Bullet In The Gun Of Robert Ford" or "Kiss The Bride".But oh well.
Disc 1 is stellar. It shows EJ at the peak of his powers in the 70's.
Disc 2 is okay, but it's weighed down at the end (the last two songs) by some songs that not in the same league as something like "Someone Saved My Life Tonight".

Overall this is still one great package.Sure there'll always be songs that "coulda and shoulda been on here" but there was only two discs to work with. It's a wonder they(the record label) put what they did on here.In other parts of the world,it's a 3 disc set not a 2.
