Crowded House - Afterglow
Afterglow Review
The unreleased residue of popular recording careers is typically the stuff of box-set "extra" discs and sometimes suspicious reissue "bonus tracks." Even the Beatles' vaunted Anthology series argued that serving up leftovers as a main course is a risky proposition at best. Afterglow, a collection of 13 surplus tracks from New Zealand popmeisters Crowded House, fares better than most such efforts, if only because of the old-fashioned dedication to songcraft that Neil Finn and company displayed throughout their career. Stretching from the band's pre-signing days ("Recurring Dream" and "Left Hand"), through no fewer than seven outtakes from the band's 1991 standout, Woodface (including some outstanding harmony work between Neil Finn and elder brother and fellow Split Enz mainstay Tim) to sparely produced tracks for an unfinished fifth album, Afterglow possesses a surprising cohesiveness as an album. While there's no stellar pop hits like "Don't Dream It's Over" lurking in this scrapyard, there's enough solid B+ material to perk the interest of Crowded House devotees. --Jerry McCulley

This collection of leftovers from Crowded House is so well sequenced and contains such great songs that it might as well BE that great lost album the band never made. Yeah, you can nitpick and say there aren't any "hits" here, but when the assured groove of "You Can Touch," or the jaunty delight of "I Love You Dawn," or the simple but eloquent "Time Immemorial" work their way into your brain, those moments are "hits" enough. If you loved their "album" albums, you'll love this. If you've never heard Crowded House before, this is a good intro to a great band.

You can never go wrong with Neil Finn

Neil Finn is what Paul McCartney would have been if he had exercised taste in his songwriting and lyrics. Even Neil's studio leftovers demonstrate his dedication to quality. These Crowded House outtakes and leftovers are better than the content of 99% of other musician's proper output. I just wish Neil released more of his stuff...makes me wonder what he has inthe can and is saving for later...

The best collection of outtakes I've ever heard

This album was the first Crowded House CD I bought, and now that I have all of the others, it remains one of my favorites. All of the tracks are great, and they range from the silly ("My Telly's Gone Bung") to the sublime (most of the others). I actually prefer this version of "Private Universe" to the version on Together Alone. The great thing about Afterglow is that it is not just for die-hard fans--anyone who appreciates good songwriting will like it.
