Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
A Rush of Blood to the Head Review
Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured debut, Parachutes. But it took less than two years for the moody British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band, Coldplay have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of their rivals in terms of imagination and emotional pull. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of "Politik" to the hushed tones of "Green Eyes" without once breaking its mesmerizing spell. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, a persuasive cross between Pink Floyd and the Verve. Even if they haven't come up with another "Yellow," you would be hard-pressed to care. This is exquisite stuff. --Aidin Vaziri

A fantastic contemporary pop rock album that'll appeal to most people - a BUNCH of hits and classics to be found here!

Though Coldplay's "Parachutes" may be the more artistically interesting album, "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" contains more hitworthy classics and is much more accessible. The song "Clocks", for example, is just a timeless pop rock tune with it's wonderful lyrics, excellent instrumentation and catchy hook. The rest of the album is definitely on par with this song - tracks like "The Scientist" and "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" are other noteworthy classics. Once again, Chris Martin delivers inspired and emotional vocals that give each song that much more charm. Every song here is great, and all the lyrics are worthy of repeated listens. The musicianship may not be terribly complex in every song, but even in its relative simplicity it sucks you in and doesn't let go. The only arguable "bad" song, here, is "A Whisper". Pop rock fans and practically everyone who says they love music will adore this album. Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
everything except, perhaps, "A Whisper"

Sounds Like a Budweiser Commercial

This CD is boring. Not bad, just boring. It has all the musical adventurism of a beer commercial. A well-produced beer commercial, granted, But still, a CD that sounds like an hour of test-tunes for Budweiser's next superbowl spot hardly merits the raves that have been showered on its head.

I wanted to give "rush of Blood" a chance, even though I'd found Parachutes uninspiring. So I brought it home, put it into shuffle-rotation with Radiohead and the Libertines, and let it rip.

Folks, I cringed whenever Coldplay came up. I was reminded of nothing so much as the bloated pop epitomized by U2 and Sting.

Download a song or two if you need a fix. But save your real money for music that you'll care about in two years. Beer commercials don't age well.
