Chris Botti - Midnight Without You
Midnight Without You Review
On paper, trumpeter Chris Botti is another smooth jazz heartthrob, a seasoned session veteran stepping out with his own mix of romantic instrumental pop. But Botti brings more care and nuance to his work than that faux category implies, and this seductive collection underlines his deeper intent in its smoky title song, a collaboration with Paul Buchanan's Scottish neo-pop band, The Blue Nile, that is sufficient excuse for entry: Buchanan's fevered yet restrained vocals answer Botti's cool, Miles-wide horn lines in a classic late-night reverie that is the set's standout, but Botti's own wordless pieces sustain the album's suave, finely crafted mood. This is one of Chris Botti's most remarkable recordings along with "To Love Again," "When I Fall In Love" and "A Thousand Kisses Deep." Mr. Botti is one of the finest jazz musicians America ever produced and he's not only a terrific trumpet player but also a talented composer as well. This recording showcases his creative musical sensibility not only for being an expert on trumpet but also his talent in composing beautiful melodies. On this CD, he composed all the delightful tunes for our listening pleasure. My friends and I will have the pleasure to be at his concert and watch him perform live with his special guests; Sting, Paula Cole, Gladys Knight, Jill Scott, Paul Buchanan, Renee Olstead and Burt Bacharach this coming Friday, December 2nd at the Wilshire Theatre.

You'll love listening to all the great tracks in this wonderful CD, which is a perfect companion for relaxation, for driving and background music for cocktail and dinner parties. To me, the most ear-catching tunes are "Regroovable," "When Rain Falls" and the title track "Midnight Without You" with Paul Buchanan presenting his vocal artistry.

Very highly recommended not only for smooth jazz lovers but also for every one who appreciates fine music and outstanding artists.

I first saw Chris Botti in Sting's "Brand New Day Tour-Live At The Universal Amphitheater" DVD. He substituted the role which used to be played by Branford Marsalis, only this time in his cool, smooth & sensuous trumpet. I used to favor the saxophone as the better horn instrument as compared to the trumpet but Chris Botti made me appreciate the trumpet by the way he plays. "Midnight..." is my second Chris Botti CD (the first one being "Slowing Down The World". He has never failed me thus far.

Complete suprise

First heard this guy (I was a jazz novice) at an in-store listening booth and bought it since it was on sale.

Without a doubt it is the favorite cool jazz disc in my wife and my collection, with the exception of Kind of Blue.

I associate locations and weather when I hear music. This reminds me of driving through downtown San Francisco on a rainy Friday night. If you've ever done that, you'll understand.

Listen and enjoy the passing of time.
