Chet Baker - It Could Happen to You
It Could Happen to You Review
Hardly as angst-ridden as Chet Baker's legend would suggest, 1958's It Could Happen to You is Baker still riding high, a star winsomely crooning some favorite standards over subtle accompaniment by small groups whose members include pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Sam Jones, and the unstoppable Philly Joe Jones on drums. Baker's boyish moods are perfect for the likes of "How Long Has This Been Going On?," "You're Driving Me Crazy," and (believe it) "Everything Happens to Me." --Rickey Wright

Not Chet's best vocal album but worth buying for track #9

This is not Chet's best vocal album but worth buying for track #9 How Long Has This Been Going On, which is a hidden gem that you can only find on this album, and is in my opinion perhaps one of the Chet's most poignant songs ever. There are some quite good other songs here, but the album as a whole outside track #9 is not nearly as strong (as a vocals album) as his greatest hits albums. Besides track #9 the other songs that are well worth a listen on this album are (in order): Everything Happens to Me; The More I See You; It Could Happen to You; You're Driving Me Crazy; and My Heart Stood Still. I rate this album 4 based on the strength of track #9.

Essential Chet Baker

This CD showcases Chet Baker's vocal abilities at their peak. His trumpet solos are also exquisite. Kenny Drew's piano work is a textbook example of how to support a vocalist, adding instrumental spice without obstructing the singer, on par with Teddy Wilson's work with Billie Holiday. Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones function similarly, swinging solidly in support without disturbing the mood of each tune. They are replaced by George Morrow and Dannie Richmond on a few tracks without incident. The marriage of great performance with a selection of great jazz standards guarantees a tasty listening experience, seasoned with a touch of Chet's bittersweet wistfulness.

or Best Of or something like that! This album is the result of Baker's first sessions for the independent Riverside label and it's just fabulous. The Chet Baker Quartet is featured includes Kenny Drew (piano), Sam Jones (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums)- ex. Miles Davis. Song selection is great and Chet's singing and playing is gorgeous! My favourite Chet album.
