Carl Thomas - Emotional
Emotional Review
On his debut album, Carl Thomas offers more of the well-sung, romantic R&B that never seems to fall out of favor. Unfortunately, while the Puffy Combs-executive-produced Emotional is perhaps a must-own for diehard fans of the genre, it seems less than inspired when compared with, say, Brian McKnight's state-of-the-art Back at One. All the elements are in place here--a guest shot by Kelly Price on "Giving You All My Love," a Stevie Wonder sample on "Summer Rain"--but for all its intended late-night aphrodisiacal potential, the music sounds flat in the bright light of day. The hilariously mumbled come-on interlude "Cadillac Rap," though, does hint at what Thomas might be capable of if he dared to buck the formula. --Rickey Wright

...And I Can't Let Go

As the cover picture depict the mood and feel of Emotional, Carl Thomas posture gives the story of the entire album. Bad Boy's first R&B male artist was a debut inviting emotions. The acoustic guitar sample adds to the crisp production of the leading track. Carl speaks of being the other man in a love triangle that's realistic, but seldom is discussed. He describes his feelings of hurt on "I Wish" over a simple drum and piano tracks. The power of words in poetry hints versatility over subtle tracks "Cadillac Rap (Interlude)" and "Trouble Won't Last". The mid-tempo "My Valentine" is an attempt just to make you smile. Some of the tunes are so simple yet almost seemed to be spoken in harmony as in "Giving You All My Love". It's Carl Thomas' style that aggressively wins you over. "Woke Up In The Morning" is as if Carl fell into the flow and tempo of the sample. Yet, "You Ain't Right", probably the fastest song here with a delayed snare has a continuous bounce to change the feel and still contribute to the overall goal of touching emotions. The quiet tones are the highlights for this LP that gives him an edge like the titles "Lady Lay Your Body" and "Hey Now". If you are looking to relax, unwind, engage in intimacy or be taken away, Carl Thomas will stir your emotions.

I know music, been writing music for years now. Music is my life; I also write music professionally.

So here is The Run Down:

At first I was kind of weirded out by his music, then after spending some time to REALLY listen the cd I fell in love with it! He's a phenomenal singer! Great voice!

All in all very very worth while. I actually just purchased another one of his cds.
