Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A. Review
Born in the U.S.A. is an album painted in big, broad strokes. But it was still too subtle for some--namely politicians who tried to tap the title track as a jingoistic anthem when it is in fact a bitter diatribe by a Vietnam War vet whose country forgot him. The rest of the album is a glorious grab bag of radio-ready populist anthems--his best display of pure pop songwriting ever--including "No Surrender," "Dancing in the Dark," "Bobby Jean," and "Glory Days" alongside more circumspect numbers such as "My Hometown" and "I'm On Fire." It's not true that there's no arguing with success, but in this case Springsteen's widespread acclaim was warranted. With Born in the U.S.A., all those predictions from a decade earlier--that Springsteen was the future of rock--had come true. --Daniel Durchholz

A Pop Album, but a Good One

First off, a lot here seem to bash this album due to the simple fact that they do not agree with the artist's political opinion. In case anyone forgot, it is the music that is important in this discussion. For that matter it is also great that some here state the song BITUSA as that of a defeatist attitude in Iraq; that's great considering it is a song written in the 1980's attacking the neglect war veterans faced returning to Vietnam. For those of your flag-waving facist lovers, you should go listen to Springsteen's Nebraska, which really brings up how American is not the City-on-the-hill empire of benevolence and purity, or for that matter somehow prove me wrong by going to Iraq yourselves. But that is besides the point. Springsteen is a great rocker. The songs (besides the first lightning rod and the last song)are shallow but extremely catchy. Bobby Jean, GLory Days and My Hometown are nostalgic, Darlington County and Working on the Highway happy country rock, I'm Going down and Downward Train about relationships, etc. This is the album to listen to in a bar with a couple of friends and a few drinks.

there are a couple songs I like on here like I'm On Fire, an Elvis like impersonation, Downbound Train, OK. But it still goes that I think his vocal presentation sucks, and so does the title track, very overrated and dull to say the the least. But if you're a Springsteen fan, get silly and buy this album, a waste, but enjoy.

One of the better pop albums of the late 80's

Bruce Springsteen will always remind me of the 80's mentality for a pop hit: find a catchy melody (usually using a synthesizer or, in this case, organ), find the hook, and rock out with it. Bruce was no different with his composition, but later I learned of the time he put into the lyrical content.

This album shows that you can love Billy Joel, Elton John, Phil Collins and Genesis, and a lot of similar artists as Bruce, but only Bruce has the possibility to provide sweet subtle tunes (I'm On Fire) on the same record as garish, over-the-top shouting and puffed-up vocals (Born In The USA). His E Street band has the right idea and provides a fairly subdued performance behind "The Boss." But no one can erase this record from history as very well produced and very well conceived.

This album has me looking back on older albums when I was younger (I was 10 when this came out) to see really what the depth of such singles and pop albums were about, and it has me seeing the world in a different light. Thank you Bruce for standing up for love of life throughout the pain of work and loss of loved ones.
