Bobby Brown - Don't Be Cruel
Don't Be Cruel Review
Although his first solo record tanked, this release looked like the beginning of a superstar career. Brown, a former lead vocalist with New Edition (he was replaced by Johnny Gill, but both men participate in most NE reunions) has an appealing, if somewhat grainy, voice. It's a good match for the hip-hop beats that underpin some of the best songs here, especially "My Prerogative," which at the time sounded like an anthem. His ability to deftly merge R&B's upscale and hip-hop street esthetic (both Teddy Riley and Babyface produce tracks on this CD) changed the role of the rake hero. Sadly, this was Brown's lone significant musical moment as a solo artist. Except for marrying Whitney Houston, his life since has become a skein of self-destructive activities. --Martin Johnson

Best 80s R&B album every made!

God, I remember pretty well when this album first came out in 1988. When I first bought it, it took weeks before I could take a break from listening to it. This is the only R&B album that I have always had ever since it came out. The only other two albums that are near the category of "Don't be cruel" would have to be New Edition's "NE Heartbreak" and Alexander O'neals "Hearsay". Anyways, this was Bobby Brown at its best. Too bad that he turned into a total LOSER!. Nevertheless, this was the Bobby that I loved. Songs from "Don't be cruel" to "Every little step" are just big time classics. Everyone should have a copy of this album. By the way, wouldn't been great if the new jack swing sound would have stayed instead of all this garbage that's out now!. Anyways, I gotta go listen to "Roni".

One hit wonder?

You've heard of a one hit wonder, where an artist has one hit and then disappears. Well this is a one hit album. This album is amazing and brings back a lot of memories. At the time I thought he was going to be the next Michael Jackson. Little did I know that that would be his shining moment, besides marrying Whitney Houston. This is one of those albums where every song is a hit. It's too bad his career never got back up to these heights.
